ART OF THE DAY | El Filibusterismo by Jose Rizal

El Filibusterismo is the widely known sequel to José Rizal’s first novel, Noli Me Tangere. It follows the story of Crisostomo Ibarra, who returns under the identity of Simoun. The novel is dedicated to the three martyr priests Mariano Gomez, José Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora, collectively known as Gomburza.

Through Simoun and the other characters, the novel reveals the harsh realities faced by Filipinos during the Spanish colonial period. Because of this, El Filibusterismo became one of the works that inspired Filipinos to fight against Spanish colonization.

The first edition of the novel was published in Ghent, Belgium, in 1891. However, due to financial difficulties, only a limited number of copies were printed.

Did you know?
A first-edition copy of El Filibusterismo was sold for 21 million pesos this February, making it the most expensive book ever sold in the Philippines.

ARTIST OF THE DAY | Ramon A. Obusan

Ramon Arevalo Obusan (June 16, 1938 – December 21, 2006) was an outstanding Filipino dancer, choreographer, stage designer, and artistic director whose work helped preserve the diverse cultural heritage of the Philippines.

He was born in Legazpi City to Dr. Praxedes Obusan and Josefina Arevalo. He studied Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology at the University of the Philippines and later worked as a teacher at Aklan Polytechnic Institute.

While in Aklan, his deep interest in Philippine folk culture grew stronger. He later became one of the country’s most respected cultural researchers, dedicating his life to documenting traditional dances, rituals, and practices of various ethnolinguistic communities across the Philippines.

In 1972, he founded the Ramon Obusan Folkloric Group (ROFG), a dance company known for its authentic and ethnographically accurate presentations of Philippine dances and traditions. In recognition of his contributions to preserving Filipino culture, he was posthumously named National Artist for Dance in 2006.
