Traditional sun-drying in the Philippines takes 8 to 20 hours and often fails when the weather turns bad. Existing automated dryers, meanwhile, lack the real-time precision needed for consistent results. To address these limitations, our team of faculty and student researchers built a smart drying box powered by a microcontroller, a tiny and affordable computer brain. It constantly monitors temperature and humidity, automatically adjusting heat and airflow to keep conditions perfect, cutting drying time nearly in half and delivering consistent, high-quality dried fish for small-scale coastal processors.
๐ Key Highlights:
โ
Dries fish in just 3.51 hours vs. 4.48 hours traditionally
โ
Maintains steady conditionsโno weather worries, no spoiled batches
โ
Easy to use for small-scale processors
โ
Scored 4.32/5 from real users
This study aligns with SDG 9 by introducing an affordable automated drying system that strengthens small-scale food processing in coastal communities, and SDG 12 by reducing post-harvest losses, minimizing waste, and promoting climate-resilient food preservation.
