“I Am Meant To Be Here: The Journey of Midwifery Graduates” is a special story-sharing series presented by the Southern Luzon State University-College of Allied Medicine in the hope to inspire students to take the path on Diploma in Midwifery.

Deciding on which career to pursue is difficult. There will be moments of uncertainties that you need to get through. Where most of the time you would ask yourself, “Is this really for me?”

For our Batch 2014 Midwifery alumnus, Mr. John Erick Salvan, finding the career to fit in didn’t become easy. As a shifter, he had these “Am I on the right path?” moments. He weighed his options until he decided that the Midwifery program is for him.

Sir Erick is ecstatic to share how the College of Allied Medicine became a big part of his success. Despite being a two-year program, the Diploma in Midwifery paved way for many opportunities. Through this program, he learned to not be afraid to take on greater heights. Aside from being a Registered Midwife, he is also a License Professional Teacher as well as a member of the Bureau of Fire Protection.

He sees proper decision-making as the biggest lesson that he learned from CAM. Something that is essential because we are dealing with life. More than that, it is a skill that he is able to apply in the different career paths that he pursued.

Also, Sir Erick realized the importance of professionalism in dealing with people from different walks of life. Being a male midwife, he utilized this value inside the delivery room. It is a challenge for him to make birthing mothers comfortable with a male midwife handling the delivery of their baby. But of course, the clinical instructors are there to help. They make sure that their students are skilled and competent to handle challenges.

There is so much beauty in the field of midwifery. So, if you’re an incoming freshmen college student who is still looking for a career that will best suit you, you may want to start considering the Diploma in Midwifery program. It continuously grows, and who knows, this might be the program that is meant for you too. We are hoping to see you around, future CAMpamilya!

“I Am Meant To Be Here: The Journey of Midwifery Graduates” is a special story-sharing series presented by the Southern Luzon State University-College of Allied Medicine in the hope to inspire students to take the path on Diploma in Midwifery.

There is no better feeling than becoming part of a mother’s birth and helping her baby come into this world. This is only one of the reasons why a midwife’s role is unlike any other. In fact, we are privileged enough to hear about such incredible experiences from one of the CAM graduates who are now registered midwifes themselves, Ms. Keysa Igloria.

Upon completing her Diploma in Midwifery on May 2016, Ms. Igloria goes on to pass the licensure examination with flying colors on November of the same year, ranking as the 5th placer among all the examinees from all over the country—a proof that nothing really is impossible!

For some of us, there is no denying that with this profession, we have ambitions to work outside the country. Our alumna is evidence that this dream is not too far from reality to achieve. In fact, at the present, she works as a staff midwife in the Labor and Delivery Unit of the Saudi German hospital. Even when before she only began as a staff midwife in the Emergency Room - OB at Quezon Medical Center for 2 ½ years. This only goes to show that we, too, can dream big and reach greater heights!

In a special interview with Ms. Igloria, she confessed that being a midwife is no easy task; it also comes with its challenges, especially now that we are in a pandemic. She stated that some patients are unaware of the gravity of its symptoms, which puts the patients themselves and the health staff at risk. Some other challenges that sadden her is the fact that some pregnant mothers are unaware of the presence and availability of midwives in the rural health settings; hence, they rarely visit the clinic for prenatal check-ups.

And of course, we could not let the opportunity of hearing about her own college experiences that would surely inspire midwifery students and CAM students alike! Like us, Ms. Igloria also began as a nobody. But, with the help of our dear clinical instructors who guided her all throughout her journey as a midwifery student even until she became a registered midwife, she was able to become someone that we can all learn from and look up to. CAM left her valuable lessons, not only about her chosen health profession, but as well as her growth as an individual. She stressed how important it is to listen to our mentors because they have been through where we are just about to go through, stating “Kung ano ang [kanilang] sinasabi ay dapat isapuso dahil ‘yun ang mag-build sa’tin kung ano ang magiging tayo in the future.”

As a parting message for midwifery students, she leaves this very inspirational and important reminder which in her words, she states: “Always think na kaya mo. Magagawa mo. Matatapos mo. Kasi for me, wala nang mas sasaya pa kun’di makita mo yung bagong silang na baby.”

So, don’t be afraid to dream big! Because under the Diploma of Midwifery, offered by the SLSU – College of Allied Medicine, we will guide you through becoming a competent and proficient midwife in the future. Be part of the ever-growing CAMpamilya and reach greater heights!

Another alumnus of SLSU- College of Allied Medicine, Mr. Ivan Fitz Kim L. Salvan, eagerly shared his journey as a Registered Midwife who currently works as a Nursing Aide in Tayabas Community Hospital Inc.

During the interview, Mr. Salvan described how SLSU and Diploma in Midwifery helped him in his personal and career path. Mr. Salvan said that there was a time when he was so confused, and several challenges were facing his way. It was the institution that pushed him and motivated him when things seemed to go against his plans.

One of the greatest challenges is that people still think that Midwifery is at a lowly educational level and thus, still creating stigma even during the present times. Looking back, Mr. Salvan also remembered how male midwives were disadvantaged as most pregnant clients prefer women over men.

Nevertheless, the said difficulties did not hinder his burning passion and dedication to serving in the field of medicine. He said that his focus, determination, and most importantly, good attitude put him to where he is now. However, his journey doesn't end here, he is young and still got a lot of destinations to go to. He's aware of more difficult paths and challenges, but he will never be shaken, for he knows that he got a stable foundation from the College of Allied Medicine.

"Kung ito man o 'yung napili mong landas sa buhay, sundin mo lang lahat ng alam mong tama.... pagdating ng oras sa jungle, isa ka nang leon.", said Mr. Salvan, as he advises students and future midwives to grab the opportunity in taking Diploma in Midwifery in Southern Luzon State University-College of Allied Medicine (CAM).

We cannot deny the fact that witnessing a mother deliver life in this world is such a powerful experience any person can have – so what more if you are one of those people who are able to help in this process?

For the longest of time, a midwife’s place is on the threshold of life. As it involves intense human emotions, longing, fear, triumph, hope, and incredible physical power to bring a new human being into this world – hence, it is indeed one of the most honorable professions in the world.

And so, this is also what Mr. Jude Niño David have known and felt all these years being a proud Certified Registered Midwife and alumnus of College of Allied Medicine – SLSU. For him, choosing midwifery is one the best decision he made. In fact, he sees being a midwife as advantage in life and even if other people see midwifery as a course for females only, he proves that there is no gender barrier in this course. Following your heart and pursuing your dream relentlessly is the key to being successful in a career regardless of anyone’s gender.

But he also admits that no path is ever really easy. So, if you want to pursue midwifery, trust in oneself is important. You can do it by believing in yourself and giving your best in every step of the way, as Mr. Jude David said, “...be a better version of yourself, mag tiwala ka sa sarili mo dahil kaya mo basta pag sisikapan mo.”

In choosing your career, it is important as well to be surrounded with people that are nurturing, skilled and professionals. Therefore, Mr. David is also beyond grateful to the professors of CAM that molded him into what he is today saying “CAM is our foundation. Lahat sila, sila ang dahilan kung ano at sino kami ngayon. Kung ano ang narating namin ngayon eh dahil yan sa solid na pundasyon ng CAM and I’m very thankful sa kanila lalo na sa mga professor. They’re maybe old but yeah they are also gold, wala silang katulad the best!!”

He graduated in 2018 and passed the licensure examination for Midwifery in the same year and today, he is one of the products and pride of his beloved college.

Today, the Diploma in Midwifery program of College of Allied Medicine aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills in midwifery foundations, normal obstetrics, infant care, and basic family planning. The program also covers topics such as prenatal care, postpartum care, high-risk obstetrics, and midwifery ethics, law, and practice. If you think that Midwifery is also for you, hesitate no more.
