Gender equality has evolved over the centuries. In ancient times, women had limited rights, though some, like Egyptian queens, held power. The Enlightenment (18th century) introduced individual rights but excluded women. The 19th century saw the rise of the women’s suffrage movement, leading to New Zealand granting women the vote in 1893.
In the 20th century, women entered the workforce after World War II but faced discrimination. The 1960s–1980s brought second-wave feminism, advocating for equal pay and reproductive rights. In 1979, the UN adopted CEDAW to promote global gender equality.
The 21st century saw progress with equal pay laws and movements like (2017) addressing harassment. Despite advancements, gender equality remains a global struggle.
