What does a Bunsen burner have to do with building a nation? To the typical Atenean, maybe nothing. To the members of the Ateneo Chemistry Society, everything.

Founded in 1963, the Ateneo Chemistry Society is a community that shares a passion in promoting the relevant application of chemistry for social engagement towards progressive nation-building. The Ateneo Chemistry Society, also known as ACheS (/eyks/), is the premier home organization for chemistry majors, but is also open to any student with a passion for science โ€“ especially the central one, Che

ON THIS DAY, we celebrate Labor Day, otherwise known as the Araw ng mga Manggagawa. This holiday honors the numerous contributions of workers and recognizes their rights. First celebrated in 1903 when a hundred thousand workers marched to Malacaรฑang to demand fair working conditions, the Philippine Assembly officially declared it as a national holiday in 1908. Labor Day is not just a regular non-working holiday to provide ample time for rest. Rather, events like job fairs, livelihood assistance, labor reforms, parades, and protests are being held.

Today, we also pay homage to our professors, lab technicians, security guards, and other workers in the Ateneo community who consistently show up to provide us with a secure and high-quality education. Moreover, we advocate for more equitable and humane workplace reforms so that every worker can live a comfortable and fulfilling life. May we remember today the people who render services for our society and envision ourselves as the next line of workers in the future, bearing the same mission and hopes for our country.

ON THIS DAY, we celebrate the World Day for Health and Safety at Work. Started by the International Labour Organization, this event has been observed since 2003 to raise awareness of safe work practices, honor the victims of workplace accidents, and promote the prevention of occupational injuries and diseases. According to the World Health Organization (2024), nearly 60% of the global population is engaged in work. The International Labor Organization also estimated that work-related diseases and injuries caused 1.88 million deaths in the year 2016. Moreover, occupational risks are considered the third largest environmental risk factor for disease estimates in the Southeast Asia region.

Today, the rights and safety of laborers are still undermined. Businesses and corporations prioritize maximizing profits over people. Most spend about half of their lives in the workplace, and only a few are given access to a working environment without much risk and schedules that consider their lives outside of their careers. These poor conditions are normalized, especially in underserved communities. In the field of chemistry, as well as in other sciences, workplace safety practices must always be applied, especially inside laboratories. As such, a radical shift towards just industries must be made. Enforcing workplace policies and regulations, as well as advocating for equitable access to better workplaces and healthcare, must be made in order to secure the rights of workers across the globe. We must always put the humanity of the people working behind institutions first and before any economic interests.

ON THIS DAY, we celebrate World Laboratory Dayโ€“a day of appreciation for the quiet spaces that fuel scientific progress in various corners of the world. Today is also a day to honor laboratory professionalsโ€”our professors, colleagues, and researchersโ€”who continue to strive for knowledge that will benefit humankind and our one and only home.

Yet in the Philippines, access to modern science laboratories remains a major challenge. Many high schools, state colleges, and universities face a severe lack of laboratory materials, advanced equipment, chemical reagents, and adequate safety systems. As a result, students are placed in precarious learning environments where the joys of experiential learning are dampened by caution, anxiety, and unmet expectations, leaving their curiosities only partially fulfilled. Educators are also affected, as the gap between theoretical learning and practical application widens.

To address these growing problems, a reexamination of priorities is in order. In a rapidly modernizing world where the marvels of technology and science can be more widely felt and enjoyed, let science education be more valued for our future science professionals, for science educators, and for our hopes of a better Philippine society.

๐Ÿ—๏ธ๐Ÿ’Ž What if we could build materials like lego blocks at the molecular level?

Thatโ€™s exactly what the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry ๐Ÿ… celebrates!! ๐Ÿงชโœจ

Last yearโ€™s laureates are the pioneers of Metalโ€“Organic Frameworks (MOFs), which are materials whose modular design allows chemists to engineer structures with unprecedented precision and internal surface area ๐Ÿคฏโœจ

Because chemists can mix and match both the metal and organic parts, MOFs can be fine-tuned to trap greenhouse gases ๐ŸŒซ๏ธ, store clean energy โšก, purify water ๐Ÿ’ง, or even deliver drugs precisely where theyโ€™re needed ๐Ÿ’Š
