Participants will revisit the foundations of literacy, examine effective reading strategies, and gain practical tools for developing learners' decoding, comprehension, and critical thinking skills.

Such a wonderful feeling to have successfully organized the 2nd ACELT
Research Symposium held on July 23-24, 2026 at Batangas State University. My heart is full—siksik, liglig, at umaapaw sa kasiyahan at pasasalamat!

I’m very grateful to Dr. Andrew Bernardo, who did not think twice about helping me conceptualize a research symposium that would serve as a platform not only for sharing but also for challenging the way we think about our ELT practices and policies. Thank you for suggesting the title “English(es) Language Teaching in the Philippines.” At dahil nag-suggest ka, ikaw na rin ang na-assign na mag-keynote on the topic! But seriously, thank you for challenging our participants to rethink and reframe the way we teach English.

This would not have been possible without our partnership with Batangas State University through the leadership of Dr. Kc Tejada. Salamat sa iyo at sa iyong buong team, KC! We felt so at home in Batangas because of your warmth and hospitality. Thank you for making sure that the activities ran smoothly as planned. Salamat sa pag-aalaga sa amin before, during, and even after the event. Thank you especially for coming all the way to Manila in February when I invited you to meet with me and Dr. Bernardo to plan for this ACELT event. You said yes without any hesitation!

I’m also overwhelmed with gratitude for the trust and confidence of all the speakers I’ve invited to share their studies at the symposium.

To Dr. Marilu Rañosa Madrunio and Director Jennie Jocson, well-respected and sought-after academics and public servants—thank you for taking time out of your busy schedules to be a significant part of this ACELT event. You both inspired us with your presence. You have no idea how much this meant to all of us!

My deepest gratitude as well to Sir King Calingasan, Sir Dan, Doc Maisie Guidote Meneses, Doc KC, Sir Andrew Garlitos, Sir Christopher Dullas Gabriel, Ma’am Ayette Ferriols, Doc Nic L. Guinto, Doc Rob Reyes, and Ms. Chelle Paterno for their willingness to take the extra mile just to be part of this event.

I am equally grateful to our second plenary speaker, Doc Len N. Canilao, not only for saying yes to be a plenary speaker but also for always supporting me and ACELT. Together with Doc Len, I will always be grateful to Doc Marianne Perfecto for her vote of confidence and support, and to Doc Isabel Pefianco Martin, also for her constant support and for giving ACELT this idea of a research symposium when she co-organized the 1st ACELT Research Symposium with SorSU. There would be no 2nd without the 1st!

And to our ever-dependable ACELT admin staff, Ms. Johanna Gail Dinio, for always making things so much easier for all of us.

English(es) Language Teaching in the Philippines: Pedagogy, Policy, and Practice

Abstract:
The Philippines occupies a distinctive position in the global landscape of English language teaching, shaped by its colonial history, multilingual ecology, and evolving educational policies. This symposium explores English(es) Language Teaching in the Philippines through the interconnected lenses of pedagogy, policy, and practice, foregrounding the plurality of Englishes and the sociocultural realities of Philippine classrooms. It examines how national language policies intersect with classroom practices across basic, tertiary, and teacher education contexts.
The symposium also highlights pedagogical innovations and challenges arising from the coexistence of Philippine Englishes, World Englishes, and standardized norms, as well as issues of equity, identity, assessment, and teacher agency. By bringing together empirical studies, reflective practice, and policy analysis, this symposium aims to contribute to critical conversations on how English is taught, learned, and positioned in the Philippines. Ultimately, it seeks to reframe English language teaching not as a monolithic enterprise, but as a dynamic, context-sensitive practice responsive to local needs and global demands.
