Every child’s reading journey is unique — but it is never random.

Reading does not happen overnight. It develops in stages, and understanding these stages helps us guide children with patience, clarity, and purpose.

🌱 Stage 1: Pre-Reader (Early Exposure)
Children begin recognizing letters, sounds, and print in their environment. They pretend to read, memorize stories, and build vocabulary through listening.

👉 What they need: storytelling, read-aloud time, playful exposure to letters and sounds.

🔤 Stage 2: Beginning Reader (Decoding Stage)
Children start connecting sounds to letters. They slowly sound out words and may struggle with fluency.

👉 What they need: phonics support, repetition, encouragement, and lots of patience.

📖 Stage 3: Developing Reader (Fluency Building)
Reading becomes smoother. They begin understanding meaning, not just decoding words.

👉 What they need: guided reading, comprehension questions, varied reading materials.

💡 Stage 4: Fluent Reader (Reading to Learn)
Reading becomes automatic. They now use reading as a tool to learn new concepts.

👉 What they need: critical thinking activities, diverse texts, discussion, and deeper analysis.

Here’s the important reminder:

If a child struggles, it doesn’t mean they are incapable.
It often means they need targeted support at the right stage.

Comparison discourages.
Understanding empowers.

To teachers: Your interventions matter.
To parents: Your daily reading time matters.
To school leaders: Structured literacy programs matter.

Progress may be gradual but growth is powerful.

Let’s meet children where they are, not where we expect them to be.
Let’s build strong readers step by step.

Because when a child learns to read confidently, we unlock a lifetime of learning.
