Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) Bachelor of Science in Biology graduate Frederick E. Uy clinched first place in the Oral Research Presentation Competition for the grantees of the 2025 DOST-PCHRD Undergraduate Thesis Grant in Natural Products during the 19th Philippine Health Research System (PHRS) Week HealthConverge in SOCCSKSARGEN, August 13.

Frederick represented Region IV-A and SLSU with his research entitled โ€œHepatoprotective Activity of Matured and Unripe Saba (Musa ร— paradisiaca L.) Peels against Acetaminophen-Induced Hepatotoxicity using Sprague Dawley Rats,โ€ which investigated the potential hepatoprotective activity of matured and unripe Saba peels against acetaminophen-induced hepatotoxicity.

The research was conducted under the 2025 DOST-PCHRD Undergraduate Thesis Grant in Natural Products, with Dr. Editha E. De Jesus serving as his thesis adviser. Dr. De Jesus guided Frederick throughout the conduct and development of the research, which advanced to the national oral research presentation competition.

Frederick emerged as the top presenter among six finalists from universities across the country who presented research on natural products and their potential health applications.

Joining Frederick among the finalists were Danica Paula Z. Vitug and Thalia Rose B. Rodriguez of the University of Santo Tomas, Zhyenell Elizah D. Geronimo of the University of the Philippines Los Baรฑos, Francis Kenneth P. Asilo of Cebu Normal University, and Zildjanrou Paz of Mindanao State Universityโ€“General Santos.

Geronimo of the University of the Philippines Los Baรฑos placed second, while Asilo of Cebu Normal University secured third place.

Frederickโ€™s achievement highlights the research contributions of SLSU graduates in natural products and health research and the potential of locally available plant resources to address health-related concerns.

The Local Government Unit of Lucban formally adopted the Five-Year Sustainability Plan Policy by SLSU researchers for the Lucban San Isidro Pahiyas Festival through Executive Order No. 107, Series of 2026, issued by Municipal Mayor Hon. Agustin M. Villaverde in Lucban, Quezon, July 10.

The said policy was based on the research-based policy paper entitled โ€œEnsuring the Pastโ€™s Future: A Five-Year Sustainability Plan for the Lucban San Isidro Pahiyas Festival,โ€ developed by Dr. Nicanor L. Guinto, Asst. Prof. Brian D. Villaverde, Mx. Amiel Jansen Demetrial, and Dr. Shiela M. Manzanilla through the research project โ€œCultural Packaging of the Lucban San Isidro Pahiyas Festival,โ€ funded by the Korea National University of Heritage through the UNESCO Chair Grant.

The adoption follows a series of engagements between SLSU researchers and LGU Lucban, beginning with the presentation of the policy recommendations to the Sangguniang Bayan of Lucban in May 2025, followed by an initial meeting with the Office of the Municipal Mayor on April 6, 2026, and a committee hearing with the Sangguniang Bayan on April 22, 2026. These engagements provided opportunities for the researchers and local government officials to discuss strategies for ensuring the long-term sustainability of the festival.

Under the Executive Order, the Five-Year Sustainability Plan will be implemented through five phases on a year-by-year basis: Year 1 focusing on planning and baseline assessment, Year 2 on sustainable festival operations, Year 3 on inclusive local economic development, Year 4 on digital transformation, and Year 5 on institutionalization. The policy also provides for the creation of the Pahiyas Festival Sustainability Council, which will oversee the implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of the sustainability framework.

The adoption of the policy marks a significant milestone in the continuing partnership between SLSU and LGU Lucban, demonstrating how research-based policy recommendations can be translated into concrete local government action toward the preservation of cultural heritage, promotion of sustainable tourism, environmental protection, and inclusive local development.
