A message typed in seconds can place an entire school in fear.
The Department of Education has warned students that bomb threats—even when supposedly made as jokes—carry serious consequences under its school discipline policy.
Under DepEd Order No. 006, s. 2026, bomb threats and bomb jokes are classified as third-level offenses because they can endanger learners, teachers, school personnel, and the wider community.
For a first offense, a student may be denied readmission to the same school the following year and referred to the appropriate government agencies for intervention.
A second offense may result in exclusion from the school, referral to authorities, and further intervention, with fairness and due process observed throughout the proceedings.
DepEd also reminded learners that spreading false information and participating in disruptive pranks can trigger panic, suspend classes, interrupt learning, and divert police and emergency resources from real emergencies.
A threat does not become harmless simply because its sender later calls it a joke. Before posting, sharing, or forwarding anything online, students are urged to pause and consider how their words may affect hundreds of classmates, families, teachers, and responders.
Do not create a threat. Do not spread it. Report it immediately.
A safe school begins when every learner understands that words and actions have real-world consequences.
