📚 | Selecting and Reporting Interobserver Agreement

How do we choose and report the appropriate Interobserver Agreement (IOA) method?

According to Cooper, Heron, & Heward (2020), no single IOA method is universally superior. The method selected should be appropriate to the measurement system and type of data being collected.

When reporting IOA, practitioners should:
🔹 Select an appropriate and sufficiently stringent method
🔹 Report the mean and range of IOA percentages
🔹 Indicate how, when, and how often IOA was assessed
🔹 Present data clearly to help readers evaluate the consistency and trustworthiness of measurement

SPEAKER SPOTLIGHT | TEACHER GINA BERMUDO 🎓

For Beyond the Label 2026, we are honored to welcome Teacher Gina Bermudo — an internationally credentialed behavior analyst, Special Education advocate, researcher, and professional trainer whose work bridges Applied Behavior Analysis, autism education, evidence-based intervention, and professional capacity-building.

A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA®) with advanced graduate training in both Applied Behavior Analysis and Special Education, Teacher Gina is currently pursuing her Doctorate in Education at Pennsylvania State University. Her academic and professional journey has been marked by excellence in research, training, and advocacy, with recognition extending to international academic platforms.

Her work reflects what Beyond the Label stands for: moving beyond awareness toward evidence-based support, meaningful intervention, and better outcomes for individuals with autism and other developmental needs.

At this year’s seminar, she brings to the stage a perspective grounded in both science and practice — connecting research, behavior, education, and the realities faced by families and professionals every day.

📚 | Methods for Calculating IOA: Timing

In Applied Behavior Analysis, Interobserver Agreement (IOA) can also be assessed when measuring the duration of behavior. Timing-based IOA methods help determine how closely independent observers agree when recording the duration of a behavior.

This infographic highlights two methods discussed by Cooper, Heron, & Heward (2020):

🔹 Total Duration IOA – compares the total duration recorded by two observers.
🔹 Mean Duration-Per-Occurrence IOA – compares the average duration per occurrence recorded by each observer.

Choosing an appropriate IOA method helps practitioners evaluate the consistency of their measurement and strengthen confidence in their behavioral data. 📊
