Did you know that… Brown rice is the whole grain form of rice since only the outermost layer called hull/husk is removed. It is also known as unpolished rice. Ccompared with white rice, brown rice (unpolished rice) is nutritionally superior because its bran layer contains higher amounts of protein, dietary fiber,B vitamins, Vitamin E, minerals, and antioxidants. Some researches show that regular consumption of whole grain cereals, such as brown rice, may help reduce the risks of cardiovascular diseases, certain types of cancer, and type 2 diabetes. Brown rice is not a variety. Any variety of rice can be made into brown rice. However, for palatability, only rice varieties that are soft are recommended for brown rice. Brown rice makes you feel full faster. Hence, to some people, instead of 1 cup of white rice,½ to ¾ cup brown rice is enough. Brown rice has higher milling recovery. When you mill a kilogram of paddy rice, your will get around 750g of brown rice instead of 650g when it is white rice. Brown rice production/milling requires less energy. The eating quality of brown rice is improved when pre-soaked in water for 30 minutes and cooked in 2 parts water per 1 part brown rice.
