Forest School Bohol

Forest School Bohol 🇵🇭🔥 Where kids take charge of their own learning. They decide and choose how they learn through risky play-- out in nature 🌳

A bright line of webbing stretches between two trees.

It looks like a simple setup.

Just a slackline hovering slightly above the earth, waiting to be crossed.

But for our little forest explorers, it is a bridge to something much bigger.

When they finally step up, the line immediately wakes up.

It shakes. Little legs tremble.

You can see the intense focus written all over their faces, with sudden bursts of nervous but happy giggles.

We see how determined they are to conquer the quivering line.

They slip. They tumble down onto the soft bed of leaf litter.

But out here, falling is never the end of the story.

They line back up, and try again.

The simple act of balancing on a slackline teaches lessons that go far beyond physical play. Resilience.

Every wobble is their nervous system actively learning to adapt, firing new signals to find stability.

Every gentle tumble is a reminder that while gravity is real, the earth is a safe place to land.

They are practicing calculated risk-taking.

They are developing incredible body awareness.

Learning precisely where their center of gravity lives, and realizing how the tiniest shift in posture changes everything.

Above all, they are building genuine courage.

The courage to attempt something unsteady and to possibly fall down in front of their peers.

The courage to stand back up.

A simple line tied between two trunks isn't just a game.

It's a wobbly yet wonderful path to self discovery ❤️🌿

In the last session, we welcomed G*, a very smiley & bubbly little guy ☺️

While the bigger kids explored, G* found his favourite spot right on the forest floor.

Welcome to his very own Forest Kitchen! 🌿

He had the best ingredients right in front of him: fresh, green leaves & crunchy, brown ones too 😃

Scoop.

Mix.

Pour.

And then, he did it all over again 🤗

To a grown-up, it might just look like making a mess. But did you know that doing the exact same thing over and over is how little ones learn?

"Repetition is research."

Every time G* fills his pot and tips it out, his brain is growing.

He is testing how things fall.

He is feeling how different leaves squish and crunch.

He is practicing how to hold his tools perfectly.

The forest is one of the greatest science labs in the world, and G* is a tiny chef & scientist ☺️

And yes, making leaf soup is very important work 🌿❤️🍂

Z*’s journey continues to unfold under the canopy & it is a joy to witness her quiet blossoming 🌸

Last week, she arrived visibly more adjusted, warming up to facilitators & friends much faster than before.

The cautious observer is stepping outward.

Where she once needed ample time to watch from a safe distance, she now wanted to join the activities quicker, happily exploring with newfound ease.

Though she is still gently finding her voice and steady footing, her growing confidence was the undeniable highlight of the session.

We watched her patiently make her own "sugba" (inihaw or barbeque), bravely try her hand at the cotton ropes, & weave herself into the social fabric of the group more.

This gentle unfolding shows how emotional & social growth cannot be forced.

By initially honoring Z*’s need to simply observe, we provided the foundation for her to actively engage.

When we offer a safe, unhurried space, a child's confidence will inevitably take root & grow. 🌿

B* had never picked up a needle & thread before.

There had been no formal lessons on textiles, and no structured craft stations on site, too.

But the forest floor is rarely just dirt and fallen leaves;
to an unhurried mind, it is a canvas of possibility.

Drawn by his own curiosity, he began sewing with the flexible midrib from the Coconut leaf. He even sharpened the tip with the multitool.

In his hands, it transformed.

It wasn't just a part of a leaf anymore.

And with it, the learning happens when we give them the uninterrupted space to discover how they can (re)shape it themselves.

Just as the session was about to close last week, a story began to unfold: Z* decided she will be the Princess of the Flowers. 🌸

A wild vine was twisted into a crown.

Working with her mom, her little hands helped weave coconut leaves into a special "coco ball."

Then, friends gathered around to help piece together a green cape. 🌿

This is the beauty of unhurried, imaginative play.

When children use their hands to craft from nature, they aren't just making toys— they are building coordination and bringing new worlds to life. ✨

Z* finds her rhythm under the shade of the trees, naturally honoring her own pace.

She is a child who absorbs her surroundings, taking the time she needs to build trust before gently collaborating with others.

While her presence is often felt more than heard, her quiet observation is a highly active form of learning.

Last session, she was our resident observer, taking everything in from a safe distance.

This time, a beautiful shift happened. she stepped into the flow of the forest, making "soup" and joining friends by the hammock.

It can be tempting for adults to encourage quiet children to "jump right in," but stepping back to let them watch is the heart of child-led play.

It removes the pressure to perform, regulates their nervous system, and builds authentic confidence.

When Z* decides to engage, that self-initiated action empowers her to trust her own instincts.

As Maria Montessori wisely noted:
"To assist a child we must provide him with an environment which will enable him to develop freely."

Here, we celebrate the loud, muddy splashes just as much as the quiet, cautious steps.

Z* reminds us all that in nature, there is no such thing as being "behind"— only a child blooming exactly when they are ready. 🌸🌿

It is always incredible to see the connection children form with nature when given the space to explore 🌱

We are so touched by this feedback from a parent whose child found a new sense of wonder after just one visit.

It is amazing to think that a single morning in the forest can inspire a child to see the small details in their everyday surroundings.

This is the power of experiential learning! it sticks with you, sparks curiosity, and makes you want to share your experiences ❤️

We can't wait to see V* back for more stories and more nature discoveries!

Every child’s journey in the forest unfolds at its own beautiful pace. 🌿

Meet A*.

His mama shared that his speech was progressing fine for a while.

Then, at some point, something shifted.

When he first stepped into the site, he communicated mostly by repeating sounds.

But the forest is a safe, unhurried space.

It didn't take long for a beautiful shift to happen.

The sounds were still there, but suddenly, his message was clear.

Through his gestures and his energy, we knew exactly what he wanted to do.

And his comprehension? Absolutely brilliant.

When it was time to pack up, A* showed us just how well he listens.

We even took a moment to say goodbye to the tiny ants he was so fascinated by. 🐜

Being in nature is healing. We witness this truth every week.

The outdoors provides a completely different, grounding kind of focus.

Out here, you don't need perfect words to be perfectly understood. 🌳✨

As soon as he got to the site, T* was in exploration when he took notice of the abundance of coconuts 🌴

A spark of curiosity hit— he wanted to try removing the husk himself.

He looked around to assess his options. There wasn't a traditional dehusking tool in sight.

Good thing child-led play is nothing if not an exercise in pure resourcefulness☺️

He spotted a hammer and decided it was exactly what he needed for the job.

What followed was beautiful to watch. T* was in a flow state. Strike by strike, he worked on the husk, pouring his physical energy and focus into the task.

He wasn't frustrated by the lack of the "right" tool; instead, he was entirely absorbed in the challenge of using the one he had.

This moment wasn't just about getting the coconut open— it was about problem-solving, and the determination of a child completely immersed in their own work.

When we give them the time, space, and trust to test their ideas, the forest becomes the perfect classroom 🌿
