It is encouraging to hear that many students from Davao del Norte State College are aware of what Down syndrome is. However, it is important to note that simply seeing someone with Down syndrome is not enough to fully understand the condition. Down syndrome is a complex genetic disorder that affects individuals in different ways, and there is a lot of misinformation and stereotypes surrounding it.
By educating people about Down syndrome, we can help them deepen their understanding of the condition and its impact on individuals and families. This can include learning about the physical and cognitive characteristics of Down syndrome as well as the social and emotional challenges that individuals with Down syndrome may face.
Through education, we can also help break down stereotypes and misconceptions about Down syndrome. For example, many people still believe that individuals with Down syndrome are always happy and easy-going, when in reality, they experience a range of emotions just like anyone else. By challenging these stereotypes and promoting a more accurate understanding of Down syndrome, we can create a more inclusive and accepting society for all.

Down syndrome is named after John Langdon Down, the British physician who first analyzed and described the condition in 1866. At the time, Down wrote and published an extensive description of the physical and intellectual characteristics he observed in individuals with the condition. He referred to it as "Mongolian idiocy" due to the resemblance he noted between the facial features of people with Down syndrome and those of people from Mongolia. Thus, due to the presumption that people with Down syndrome resembled those of Mongoloid racial background, the term "mongoloid" was formerly used to describe them. It's vital to remember that this phrase is today seen as archaic, vulgar, and insulting. It is no longer acceptable or suitable to refer to people with Down syndrome or any other condition in this way. Raising awareness of the negative effects of such language and educating people about the proper terms are crucial if we want to discourage its use and encourage more polite language. And here are some steps you can take using the AIRA approach:
โข Advocate for inclusion
Inform yourself and others on the significance of inclusion and Down syndrome. Be aware that obsolete or disparaging terminology should not be used to describe people with Down syndrome or people with intellectual disability.
โข Inform and raise awareness
Inform others about Down syndrome and the importance of speaking politely. Use blogs, social media, and other channels to raise awareness and advance knowledge.
โข Respectful language
When talking about Down syndrome or any other condition, use polite words. Set a positive example by using inclusive words and actions.
โข Act as an ally
Be a Down syndrome advocate. Join organizations and advocacy groups that promote inclusion and rights for people with Down syndrome. Encourage efforts and projects that try to dispel prejudices and encourage acceptance.
By employing the AIRA approach, you may actively contribute to fostering a society that is more accepting and tolerant of people with Down syndrome.

Amazing story and shines a light on discrimination. Inclusivity should not be just an initiative we implement, but the norm so thereโs no need to distinguish based on any variations such as gender, race, and appearance. etc.

Every cell in the human body has a nucleus and this is where genetic material is stored in genes. The codes responsible for all our inherited traits, are called genes and they are grouped along rod-like structures called chromosomes. Characteristically, the nucleus of each cell contains 23 pairs of chromosomes. Half are inherited from each parent. Down Syndrome occurs when an individual has a full or partial additional copy of chromosome 21.
This extra genetic material alters development and causes the characteristics associated with Down Syndrome. Common physical traits of Down Syndrome include low muscle tone, small build, an upward slant to the eyes, and a single deep crease across the center of the palm โ however, each person with Down Syndrome is a unique individual and could have these physiognomies to different degrees, or not at all.
