The 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘆𝗮𝘀 (𝗨𝗣 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘆𝗮𝘀) is developing the 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 Small-Scale Fisheries (𝗠𝗔SSF), an interdisciplinary graduate program focused on the social, cultural, institutional, and governance dimensions of small-scale fisheries (SSF), grounded primarily in social science perspectives.
The program emphasizes critical analysis of policies, power relations, local knowledge systems, and community institutions that influence sustainability, equity, and livelihoods in fishing communities.

We invite students, professionals, researchers, practitioners, and individuals with an interest in small-scale fisheries to participate in our Interest Survey. Your responses will help us assess the interest, relevance, and demand for the proposed MASSF program.

Today, as we celebrate the World Marine Protected Area (MPA) Day, TBTI Philippines – Palawan Hub recognizes the vital role of MPAs in sustaining the rich marine ecosystems that support the lives and livelihoods of Palawan’s small-scale fishers. Healthy MPAs serve as breeding and nursery grounds for fish and other marine species, helping replenish fisheries, strengthen food security, and build resilience against environmental and climate-related challenges. By empowering coastal communities to participate in the stewardship and management of these protected areas, we can ensure that our seas remain productive and that future generations of fishers continue to benefit from the invaluable resources of our oceans.

Together, let us champion community-centered conservation and celebrate MPAs as a cornerstone of sustainable small-scale fisheries and thriving coastal communities in Palawan.

🌐 Today is MPA Day! Marine Protected Areas, or MPAs, are essential to protect and restore the health of the ocean, and the multiple services it provides. However, despite their importance, MPAs remain relatively unknown to much of the public and even many decision-makers.

Endorsed by the and led by a consortium of South African-based organizations, MPA Day seeks to change that by:

🔵 Inspiring communities, schools and organizations to engage with marine protection
🔵 Highlighting the role of MPAs in achieving global ocean conservation goals

Palawan fisherfolk leaders represented the province in the launch of ATIN WPS, a national initiative that equips fisherfolk with factual and evidence-based information to help address misinformation about the West Philippine Sea.
