RSU presents winning Futures Thinking entry at WURI Global Conference 2026 in Germany

DEGGENDORF, GERMANY — Romblon State University (RSU) brought its island-rooted vision of higher education to the global stage as it presented its award-winning entry, The RSU Futures Thinking Capacity Programs, at the WURI Global Conference 2026 (WGC26), held September 23–25, 2026, at the Deggendorf Institute of Technology (DIT) in Deggendorf, Germany.

Leading the RSU delegation, University President Merian P. Catajay-Mani attended the conference as an official speaker upon the invitation of DIT, accompanied by Dr. Arlo Mortos, Campus Director of RSU Sta. Maria.

President Mani presented the program before an international audience of university presidents, faculty leaders, and administrators during the conference's showcase of successful cases, sessions dedicated to the innovations recognized in this year's World University Rankings for Innovation (WURI).

Carrying the principle "Dare to be Different," President Mani’s presentation reflects RSU's use of Futures Thinking to develop the foresight and strategic capacity needed to anticipate change and shape the future of the island province of Romblon and beyond.

The presentation also underscored how a state university from an archipelagic, island setting can contribute meaningful models of innovation to the global higher education community.

The WGC26 opened with a plenary session featuring the Conference Chair, Ulrike Sauckel; WURI Foundation Chair Dong-Sung Cho; and WURI Ranking Chair Kyung-Sung Kim, who gave an overview of the WURI Ranking 2026.

The opening program also included the conferment of category awards to 24 winning projects across Categories A, B, and C, recognizing institutions for excellence in areas ranging from student engagement and leadership to research, curricular innovation, and social impact.

Former DIT President Peter Sperber delivered the keynote address, while DIT President Waldemar Berg formally welcomed the delegates.

Beyond the case presentations, the three-day conference featured networking sessions of the World University Network for Innovation (WUNI) for presidents, faculty leaders, and administrative experts; a Certified WURI Mentor (CWM) program; and a panel discussion on how industry transformation is reshaping the future of Third Mission Universities, with former Nvidia Vice President for Sales Bernhard Gleissner and former Siemens Mobility CFO Karl Blaim.

RSU's participation in WGC26 reinforces its growing international presence and its standing in global innovation rankings, as it continues to pursue its mission of delivering quality, relevant, and future-ready education rooted in the Romblomanon experience.

During the official launch of ALWAN HopeLine, University officials shared words of support that highlighted the importance of listening, making space for well-being, and building a community where seeking help is met with understanding.

Because no one should have to carry everything alone.

The Romblon State University Human Resource Management Office (HRMO) formally opened the Faculty Development and Succession Planning Writeshop on September 23, 2026, at the Conference Room, 3rd Floor, Administration Building.

The first day began with the Opening Ceremony, followed by the HR Portal Orientation and Demonstration facilitated by Mr. Ricky Michael M. Oliva, Director of the Management Information System Office. This was followed by an overview of the writeshop’s objectives and expected outputs, led by Mr. Juniel G. Lucidos, Associate Professor V.

In her inspirational message, Dr. Emelyn F. Montoya, Vice President for Academic Affairs, emphasized that faculty development is not about addressing inadequacy, but about recognizing the greater potential of every faculty member and preparing them for the demands of the future. She emphasized the importance of continuously developing competencies as the university and the world around it continues to change.

Dr. Montoya also encouraged participants to view the writeshop not as an additional burden, but as an opportunity to pause, reflect, learn, and meaningfully plan for their professional growth and their contribution to the University.

The first day concluded with the start of the writeshop proper, where participants began working on their respective Faculty Development and Succession Plans, taking a step toward building a university that is not only responsive to the present, but prepared for the future.

Recognizing the importance of accessible mental health support and peer connection, Romblon State University (RSU), through its Guidance and Counseling Services Office (GCSO), officially launched the ALWAN HopeLine on September 23 at the RSU Quadrangle.

ALWAN, which stands for Advocacy on Leveraging Well-being through Assistance in Mental Health Crisis and Nurturing Peer Support, is a GCSO-led initiative that aims to provide accessible assistance during mental health crises while nurturing a culture of peer support within and beyond the University community.

Romblon State University, through its REDI Office, formally launched the project: “Development of the Integrated Coastal Resource Management (ICRM) Plan for Alcantara, Romblon" through a kickoff program and ceremonial signing held in the Research Building, at the RSU Main Campus, in partnership with the Local Government Unit of Alcantara.

Present were Dr. Garry Vanz V. Blancia, Director of RDI; Prof. Dr. Eddie G. Fetalvero, VPREDI, representative of University President Prof. Dr. Merian P. Catajay-Mani; and from the Municipal Government of Alcantara: Mayor Hon. Riza G. Pamorada, M.D., Vice Mayor Hon. Aldrio G. Galin, Jr., SB Members Hon. Cristina M. Imperial and Hon. Mark Jude M. Ignacio, Municipal Agriculturist Mr. Alex John R. Galicia, and the MFARMC Representative, Mr. Jolius G. Maestro.

Engr. John Ruzzel M. Galoso serves as Project Leader of the ICRMP Project and Head of the Geospatial Assessment Component. The Marine and Coastal Component is composed of Mr. Jeniel A. Santos and Mr. Vincent Jay H. Gado. The Environmental and Physical Component is headed by Engr. Raymund G. Inocencio, while the Socio-Economic and Legal Component is headed by Mr. Yolly M. Fabito, Jr. Engr. Frezil G. Falla serves as Project Research Assistant.

This collaboration between the University, the local government, and community stakeholders underscores the shared responsibility of translating scientific research into direct, tangible benefits for coastal communities. The activity reflects RSU's continuing commitment to bringing research to the communities it serves, with honor and excellence, and echoes the spirit of Agham na Ramdam — science that is felt and experienced by the very communities it aims to uplift.

The activity concluded with the ceremonial signing, formalizing the commitment of RSU and its partner agencies to the implementation of the ICRMP Project.

Running from September 23 to 24, the two-day writeshop brings together representatives from the University’s Colleges and Campuses to identify faculty development needs, competency gaps, and critical academic and leadership functions, while working toward responsive Faculty Development and Succession Plans for their respective units.

Participants are also working with the necessary faculty and workforce information, forms, and templates that will serve as key working documents for preparing the comprehensive RSU Faculty Development and Succession Plan.
