The College of Fisheries – Graduate Students Association (CF-GSA) of Central Luzon State University (CLSU) officially launched Academic Year 2025-2026 with its Orientation Program and Induction of Officers, held at the Abella Hall on August 1, 2025.

Dr. Hazel Monica M. Peralta, Acting Dean of the College of Fisheries, warmly welcomed the graduate students and also led the official oathtaking of the newly elected officers, reinforcing the administration’s support for student leadership and active participation. Inspirational messages were delivered by esteemed researchers and alumni of the college, including Jefferson D. Gagelonia (Project Assistant II, FAC) and Cheryl Grace B. Hoggang (Senior Science Research Specialist, DOST-FAC), who encouraged students to embrace challenges, uphold academic integrity, and contribute meaningfully to fisheries research and development.

Dr. Alvin T. Reyes, Head of the Department of Aquatic Resources, Ecology, and Management, conducted a comprehensive orientation on the graduate program, providing students with an overview of its structure, policies, and available opportunities. An open forum followed, during which Dr. Reyes addressed questions and concerns raised by the graduate students.

The event concluded with closing remarks from Dr. Rea Mae C. Templonuevo, CF-GSA adviser and Head of the Department of Aquaculture, who conveyed her appreciation to the faculty members, guest speakers, and graduate students for their enthusiastic participation and continued support.

This initiative signifies the start of a collaborative and fruitful academic year, with CF-GSA dedicated to representing graduate students and promoting the advancement of fisheries science through research, leadership, and service.

Central Luzon State University (CLSU), through its College of Fisheries (CF) and Freshwater Aquaculture Center (FAC), successfully conducted the 8th CF/FAC In-House Student Research Review on May 20–21, 2025, at the CF/FAC Compound, CLSU, Science City of Muñoz, Nueva Ecija. Framed by the theme “Innovative Research for Inclusive Development: Bridging Science, Gender, and Sustainability,” the event aimed to provide an accessible platform for both undergraduate and graduate students to showcase their research outputs.

The event featured three major activities: poster presentations, paper/oral presentations, and plenary sessions. In her opening message, Dr. Hazel Monica M. Peralta, CF Acting Dean, emphasized that innovation is not only about creating new technologies but also about enhancing existing knowledge. Relatedly, Dr. Karl Marx A. Quiazon, Director of the Freshwater Aquaculture Center, highlighted the significance of both basic and applied research in making real impact in the fisheries industry. He further stressed that the in-house review is an opportunity for student researchers to obtain constructive feedback on their research. Moreover, during the plenary sessions, Dr. Ronan G. Zagado, from the CLSU-Department of Communication and Development Studies, presented his gender-transformative, community-based research on Golden Rice, outlined based on the Harmonized Gender and Development Guidelines. Likewise, Prof. Janet O. Saturno, Director of the CLSU-University Gender and Development Office (UGADO), discussed the legal foundation for integrating gender in research, extension, and education, and further illustrated how gender lens are applied in fisheries research, extension, and education.

Resident CLSU experts and alumni were invited as evaluators for the poster and paper presentations. The panel of evaluators for the poster presentations included Asst. Prof. Simon G. Alcantara (University of the Philippines Los Baños), Assoc. Prof. Geraldine G. Tayag (CLSU), Ms. Hannah Jean R. Juguilon (Pangasinan State University), Mr. Niko A. Macaraeg (National Fisheries Research and Development Institute), and Ms. Goldyn Anne A. Comisario (Isabela State University). Meanwhile, serving as evaluators for the paper/oral presentations were Dr. Rea Mae C. Templonuevo, Dr. Marvin Bryan S. Salinas, Dr. Peachy G. Domingo, and Mr. Daryl A. Juganas—all from CLSU, together with Dr. Reginor Lyzza A. Roque from Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University.

Research staff and graduate students from the College of Fisheries/Freshwater Aquaculture Center (CF/FAC) of Central Luzon State University (CLSU) participated in a short-term training on “Aquaculture and Value-driven Product Innovation” held from May 5 to 9, 2025, at Maejo University (MJU) in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

The Faculty of Fisheries Technology and Aquatic Resources (FFTAR) organized the training to strengthen participants' technical expertise in sustainable aquaculture and product development. The CLSU delegation, composed of Dr. Alvin T. Reyes, Ms. Avejoy C. Ramos, Ms. Cheryl Grace B. Hoggang, Mr. Ricardo A. de Guzman, and Ms. Gedielyn A. Paje was warmly welcomed by MJU President Dr. Weerapon Thongmathe.

Participants took part in various learning activities, including a visit to a private freshwater crab farm guided by Dr. Chanagun Chitmanat. During the visit, they explored rice field crab cultivation methods and observed the preparation of “Ang Puna”, a traditional Thai dish made from freshwater crab.

At the NexFish Factory, an advanced aquaculture and agri-food processing facility, the team worked under the guidance of Dr. Daracha Thiammueang and Dr. Nongpanga Sangcharoen to develop a fish-based instant rice porridge. They conducted product formulation, sensory evaluation, and moisture and water activity analyses to ensure the product met quality and shelf-life standards.

Hands-on training in fish hydrolysate processing was also conducted under the mentorship of Dr. Jackiesyong Meenakorn. Fish hydrolysate, produced through the enzymatic breakdown of fish parts, is a nutrient-rich liquid used as organic fertilizer and animal feed, supporting sustainable resource utilization.

The participants also visited the Agri Inno, MJU’s Center of Excellence in Agricultural Innovation for Graduate Entrepreneurs. The visit showcased sustainable product innovations such as biodegradable packaging, decorative items made from rice and corn husks, and plant-based bags and hats, all highlighting the potential of eco-friendly materials in agri-enterprise. They also tested skincare products made from seaweeds, h**p seed, and other natural ingredients, and used a machine designed to assess skin condition.

The training contributes to the achievement of several United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals, including Zero Hunger, Industry and Innovation, Responsible Consumption and Production, and Climate Action. It also strengthened academic collaboration between CLSU and MJU, paving the way for future joint research, student and faculty exchanges, and cooperative development initiatives.
