“Dagyaw sa CPSU”: Farmers and University personnel strengthen ties through “Bayanihan” initiatives

In an inspiring display of collaboration and solidarity, around 50 farmers within the CPSU reservation area, together with the CPSU non-teaching personnel came together for a “bayanihan” effort to clear and beautify the vicinity of the newly renovated Homemakers’ building, and around the General Services Office, and Supply Office in the morning of January 24, 2025.

Led by Dr. Aladino Moraca, University president, and Engr. Marc Alexei Caesar Badajos, VP for Admin and Finance, everyone pitched in to clear debris from the old building and other waste materials revealing the true spirit of communal unity. As each one worked hand-in-hand for the ongoing initiative, not only had they transformed the area into a more welcoming space, but the collective effort symbolized the strength of cooperation for mutual support while also deepening ties within the community.

This engagement with the partner farmer communities has been seasoned with time which started even before the pandemic. With CPSU’s persistent green advocacy practices coupled with life-changing technologies being extended to the community, the university has not only nurtured environmental stewardship but also transformed lives that provided farmers with new opportunities to improve their livelihoods. From learning sustainable and efficient farming techniques to accessing small-scale farm tools fabrication through the university’s extension and community initiatives, these programs have become vital in offering additional sources of income for their families.

In an interview, Dr. Moraca stated that caring for the people and the environment should become a shared responsibility. He emphasized that the assistance CPSU extends to its community reflects the ‘face of the government’ - with its heart for public service – demonstrating to rural communities that the government, through CPSU, genuinely cares and is taking concrete steps to uplift their quality of life. This mutually beneficial relationship has inspired farmers to give back to CPSU by actively participating in activities and programs that support the university’s goals.

“CPSU has given us so much. It has been the source of opportunity and purpose to many. Most importantly, ensuring that the university achieves its goals requires collective effort - something which could not be accomplished alone. It is a mission that thrives on unity and cooperation.”

Looking ahead, CPSU remains committed to strengthening this collaboration by maintaining its extension initiatives that foster both environmental sustainability and economic growth to empower the community. With continued partnership and support, the university will also ensure that the farmers’ children will have the opportunity to pursue quality higher education, achieve their full potential, and secure a brighter future to be able to contribute to the growth of their communities.

CPSU – College of Criminal Justice Education lauds newly registered Criminologists

Central Philippines State University–Main Campus celebrates another triumphant success with thirty-two (32) successful examinees in the February 2024 Criminologist Licensure Examination (CLE) conducted by the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC) garnering a passing percentage of 52.11% for the first-time takers, with an overall performance of 49.35%.

Global gastronomy meets local flavor: CPSU welcomes University of Gastronomic Sciences, Italy and Slow Food International

Venturing into the realms of organic agriculture and local food preparation practices, a group of 16 undergraduate students from the University of Gastronomic Sciences (UNIGS), Italy, in collaboration with Slow Food International, undertook a learning expedition at CPSU – Main campus on January 23, 2024, through the University International Affairs Office (IAO) headed by Dr. Joean Mae Escober.

The team, as accompanied by Prof. Rae Macapagal of the University of the Philippines and UNIGS alumnus, Ms. Rowan Hallet, the trip facilitator and tutor at UNIGS, Ma’am Bing Montinola of Slow Food Negros, and Ma’am Pushpa Tan, also a representative from Slow Food, and El Sola representative, were graciously welcomed by the CPSU personnel and students at the RDEC Conference room.

The visit aimed at fostering a comprehensive understanding of organic agriculture and technology through benchmarking activities on the institution’s best practices along agriculture, food security, and the local food processes of the community. The highlight of their visit was a tour at the University's diverse project sites such as the Muscovado Center, Pandayan, Green Tech, Handloom Center, Distiller, Agricultural Tramline, Vermicompost area, Engineered Bamboo Center, and the Organic Hub.

Along this activity, Dr. Aladino Moraca, University President, conveyed his unwavering optimism and support for advancing international activities as a pivotal direction for his administration in 2024 and beyond. He emphasized the University's commitment to strengthening universal linkages, dedicating its efforts to fostering cross-cultural collaborations in the global academic landscape. He further expressed confidence in the transformative impact of global engagement, underlining the importance of creating a vibrant and inclusive environment for all.

Embarking on the said quest, Dr. Fernando Abello, VP for Academic Affairs, in his opening talk, likewise expressed how the activity is considered as both a pride and an opportunity for CPSU along its internationalization targets and mandated virtue. Along this, he hoped that the visitors acquired practical and valuable insights to take back to their respective places.

Prof. Rae of the UNIGS team likewise expressed his gratefulness to CPSU saying how the warm hospitality of the University exceeded their expectation. He also explained how CPSU became one of their identified sites for the field visit, which was due to the latter’s active and well-acclaimed organic practices and local culinary arts recognized in the region in partnership with the Slow Food – Negros. Along this, he stated that they will be visiting the school once again by March of this year for another batch of students from their Master’s program.

Dr. Maryvic Pedrosa, director for Production and Enterprise Development Office (P**O), then gave a brief overview of the rich natural resources and vast area of CPSU with its diverse agri-project sites. Being one of the active proponents of the CAF extension and community activities, she highlighted in her talk the best practice of the University which is to create partnerships with the local farmers in the community to advance the goals of the University especially in protecting the environment, promoting naturally grown food, and in producing locally prepared delicacies to address food security and augment livelihood opportunities.

Prior to the tour, Dr. Escober presented the itinerary to the visitors. As the International Affairs director, she expressed high hopes that the said visit would yield a positive impact for the University, and serve as a gateway for partnership opportunities with UNIGS in the future.

The said activity was attended by Dr. Grenny Jungco, QA director, Dr. Jimmy Degillo, Extension and Community Services director, student representative to the Board, Hon. John Rey Agustin, Mrs. Nelly Cabual, Board Secretary, the College deans and directors, Dr. Michael Bacolod, Mrs. Victorial Besana, students from the College of Agriculture and Forestry (CAF) and the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), and the farmer association leaders, among others.

From Pins to Proficiency: CPSU-CBM holds First Pinning Ceremony to BSHM students

The CPSU College of Business and Management (CBM) conducted its first Pinning Ceremony for the 57 Bachelor of Science in Hotel Management (BSHM) students with the theme, "Honoring the Journey, Embracing the Future," on January 18, 2024. The said momentous event unfolded within the esteemed confines of Mount Ballo Hall at the CPSU Main Campus, echoing the spirit of academic achievement and anticipation for their promising future ahead.

In line with the event's essence, the Senior class of BSHM students is poised to take flight into the realm of promising field exposure as they commence their internship journey. This celebratory occasion stands testament to the dedication and perseverance these students have invested to reach this significant milestone in their academic journey.

Gracing the event was Ms. Michelle R. Palmes, the guest speaker who emphasized in her speech that endeavors pay off when coupled with dedication and hard work. “No matter how tiring and exhausting the process may be, never give up. In the hospitality management industry, you will start from the bottom up, and your experiences will elevate you to a higher position over time," said Ms. Palmes.

Further, in an inspirational message to fellow interns, Mr. Jun Mesiah Aldrino, BSHM 4 uttered words of encouragement saying, "Let's all aim for success. We may have different perspectives on what success truly means, but I really hope all of us will achieve it.”

The later part of the program featured various cultural performances from the students, followed by the words of gratitude to faculty and staff delivered by CBMSS Vice Governor Lea B. de Vicente saying that as students, they should not just retain what's in the book, but most importantly they must learn the right attitude and applications, especially when entering the hospitality industry.

CBM Dean, Sheila Ignacio, also reminded the students to let their dedication be their compass in guiding them through the challenges ahead, and their passion be the fuel in propelling them toward success. Along with unwavering enthusiasm and a passionate work ethic instilled in the minds of the students, this would surely aid them in their succeeding endeavors beyond the campus premises.

Also attending the event were the faculty and staff of the CBM department, Ma’am Charity Vergara, Ma’a, Lewelyn Ronquillo, Sir Roland Celis and Sir Raphy Gabayoyo, among others. The successful event was facilitated by the College of Business Management Student Society.

“Magsik”: CPSU-CCJE holds Pinning and Donning Ceremony to Class 2024

Central Philippines State University's College of Criminal Justice Education (CCJE) marked a significant milestone with its Pinning and Donning Ceremony, a momentous event held on January 17, 2024, at the CPSU Sports Field. The ceremony, attended by seventy-one (71) 4th-year Criminology students, witnessed a poignant gesture as proud parents officially pinned their sons and daughters, symbolizing a commitment to professionalism as these students embark on their journey as criminology interns.

The said event was graced by Patrolman Clemente De Cabilen, Jr., Team Member, RMFB6, 004 Company who highlighted in his speech that in the field of Criminology, one has the opportunity to be a beacon of hope for those who are victims of crimes. “Your dedication, compassion, and commitment to justice will inspire others and create lasting change. Believe in the idea that everyone starts somewhere… keep your focus and appreciate the people around you," Sir Cabilen said.

Also speaking on the significance of the event was Ma’am Shenai F. Juance, CCJE dean, who stressed on the values that interns need to carry when deployed in their designated stations. "You are not only carrying yourselves but also the whole CCJE and CPSU," she emphasized.

Cop. Col. Neariah C. Maestro, Chief COPS, also delivered his message for the Donning of Rank reminding the student-interns to express their gratitude to every person who had been made an instrument of where they are now - their instructors, parents, friends, and families. He also encouraged his fellow Criminologists to never forget who they are so as to not disappoint those who work hard for their success. "...Let's just us do our best. Let us trust ourselves, trust our comrades, officers, and leaders," he said.

Also speaking as a parent of an intern, PSMG Michael Villafuerte, explained to the audience why the pin is put in the heart and the badge on the shoulder. "Remember the 3 P's - Patience, Perseverance, and Prayer. Put God at the center of all your decisions in life because that is your strong foundation,” he stated.

Dr. Pilipinas Ma. Jareño, OSSA dean, also expressed her pride of being able to witness the the said occasion stating, “…prayerfully all of you will graduate. As benchmarks for the lower years, consider the messages conveyed by your mentors and the achievements of the alumni before you. This is important because in two years or one year, you will also be in a similar position," she emphasized.

Their words served as guidance and inspiration as the students embarked on their actual field exposure, marking the commencement of their commitment to the field of Criminology. Their words not only imparted wisdom but also reinforced the importance of professionalism and dedication in their chosen path, setting the tone for a promising journey ahead.

Also present during the event were the CCJE faculty and staff headed by Sir Elmer S. Manzanares, and Sir Emmanuel Onofre. The said event was facilitated by the CSS - Criminology Student Society headed by their governor, Miss Kelsey Villafuerte.

CPSU celebrates the month of Visayan Heritage Preservation

In a splendid display of cultural vibrancy and pride, the fiscal year 2024's inaugural monthly convocation with the theme, “Preserving the Visayan Heritage,” held on January 15, 2024, at the Clemente Sports Complex, CPSU Main Campus, became a captivating celebration dedicated to preserving the rich heritage of the Visayan community.

The program's goal was to amplify public awareness of the significance of protecting the institution's huge cultural inheritance and to promote the region's heritage, as attended by both personnel and students of the University.

Dr. Jose Gay Gallego, the program’s first resource speaker and the esteemed coordinator of the University Historical and Cultural Heritage Center and curator of the institution's museum, delved into a profound and engaging talk on the significance of heritage. With a keen focus on its various facets, types, and practices that underscore our role as Negrenses in preserving our cultural treasures, Dr. Gallego illuminated the essence of honoring our rich heritage.

Furthermore, he captivated the audience by showcasing a vibrant tapestry of Visayan delicacies, traditional music, and indigenous crafts that are celebrated in each province. This not only added a sensory dimension to his talk but also underscored the diverse and culturally rich tapestry that defines our local heritage.

"Heritage serves as a reflective mirror, offering a profound glimpse into one's origin and functioning as an integral part of individual identity. It encapsulates not only the historical narrative of a community or individual but also the essence of their cultural roots. This collective history, intricately woven into the fabric of heritage, becomes a defining element that shapes one's sense of self,” Dr. Gallego said.

The second guest speaker was Mr. Larry John Perez, also a CPSU instructor and the co-founder of the University Heritage Center. He highlighted the critical role of intact ecosystems in supporting the region's unique wildlife, especially the endangered Visayan Hornbill (Kalaw). He also spoke about the spectacular unique historical and natural areas within the University reservation area such as the Bangkulo-on Lake of Sitio Yamot and the Mother and Baby Falls, among others.

Taking part in this celebration proves CPSU's dedication to preserving the cultural tapestry and practices of the Visayan heritage making it truly remarkable for the generations to come. Part of the event is showcasing how the power of education helps in ensuring that future generations of students will have a deeper understanding and fuller appreciation of the region's diverse heritage.

The second part of the program was the introduction of the newly hired and promoted personnel for 2023 and 2024 followed by the Oath-Taking ceremony as inducted by the University President Dr. Aladino C. Moraca.

The said event was sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences headed by Ma’am Bella Supe, OIC-Dean, in collaboration with the University Historical and Cultural Heritage Center.

“Hakut award”: CPSU chorale hailed as champion in the “Paskwa sa Kabankalan” Daigon Competition

December 23, 2023 - Wrapping up the year on a high note, CPSU celebrates yet another win as its University chorale clinches the top spot in the prestigious “Daigon” competition held at the Kabankalan Public Plaza.

In a resounding sweep, the group not only secured the coveted first place but also claimed all the special awards, such as Best in Costume, Best in Choralography (Chorale choreography), and Best in Performance.

The orchestration of this triumph is as much an art as the performance itself, a credit to the masterful guidance of its trainer/conductor Sir Francis Emoy, and Sir Zelney Tarrazona Andrada, assistant trainer, alongside the creative moves of the group’s choreographer Sir John Mark Alpay.

As the overall champion, the group received a trophy, a certificate and a cash prize worth Php 10,000, and Php 1,000 for every special award they garnered.

This event, led by the Kabankalan City Tourism Office, is part of the City's lineup of Christmas activities and programs to spread festive cheer to all Kabankalanons while advancing the promotion of the community's cultural legacy.

In attendance to witness and revel in the team's glory are Mrs. Rachel Robles, KSCD director, Prof. Eleanor Castro, Director for Curriculum Planning and Development, and Prof. Mary Ann Dagunan from the College of Agriculture and Forestry (CAF), among others. Together, they join in the celebration of this momentous victory, marking yet another feather in the cap of CPSU's thriving cultural legacy.

“1 million trees” Phase 1: CPSU and NWTF distribute solar lanterns to 10 farmer associations

In a promising synergy between CPSU, Negros Women for Tomorrow Foundation (NWTF), and the farming communities to mitigate climate change and restore biodiversity within the University’s reservation area, a palpable collaboration was forged to weave a narrative of shared responsibility along a common vision for a sustainable future.

Last December 22, 2023, the College of Agriculture and Forestry (CAF), under the visionary leadership of its dean, Dr. Hanzel Pedrosa, a ceremonial turnover of solar lanterns to the ten (10) farmer associations within CPSU’s expansive land reserve was conducted at the CAF Building facade.

This event is the first phase of its recently sealed partnership with the NWTF on the project aptly named, "1 Million Trees and Counting," which seeks to empower farmers by providing them with a set of solar lanterns in exchange for the cultivation of 300 fruit-tree seedlings.

This scheme aims to fast-track the distribution of the seedlings and the re-greening program of its forest.

Conceived by the University’s visionary president, Dr. Aladino C. Moraca, this initiative is a testament to the power partnerships can bring in realizing its long-sought community development. This is in collaboration with NWTF, represented by Ms. Princess Balaan.

Dr. Moraca explained how this engagement proves CPSU’s undeterred dedication to preserving the health of the environment while simultaneously fostering sustainable economic growth and food security for the households in the community.

“By nurturing the growth of these seedlings, we not only contribute to the well-being of our local ecosystem but also empower our farmers to cultivate a food-secured, sustainable future for themselves and their families. Let us embrace this opportunity to weave a tapestry of environmental consciousness, economic prosperity, and communal well-being, as we take another bold stride in advancing our University's advocacy for a healthier, more sustainable world,” Dr. Moraca said.

This venture underscores CPSU, NWFT, and the farmers' profound commitment to be stewards of progress for the future generations. Through their active engagement in tree planting, they embody a collective determination to contribute to a productive and sustainable community.

CPSU joins Negros Wildlife Photo Exhibit 2023 at SM City Bacolod

Central Philippines State University (CPSU) - Main Campus actively participated in the Negros Wildlife Photo Exhibit last November 28 to December 15, 2023, at the East Bridgeway, SM City Bacolod.

Displayed in the CPSU exhibits, which spanned for three weeks, were the photo collections of Sir Pierre Gabriel San Jose, an instructor of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) under the Natural and Physical Sciences division, that featured the hidden beauty of the different bird species found in the CPSU reservation area. Likewise, For. Dominic Billen and Xylon Tanate from the College of Forestry (CAF) added an artistic flair to the exhibit. Their paintings showcased faunal species found in the Philippines, contributing a visually striking element to the celebration.

Along with the advocacy of this event, Dr. Aladino C. Moraca, CPSU President, pledged unwavering support to Negros Occidental, aligning with SM to showcase the University Reservation's diverse wildlife and rich ecosystem through the exhibit, as part of its Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) campaign. Dr. Moraca revealed CPSU's upcoming project with PEMO-TSSD, which focused on cataloging the University’s Flora and Fauna in 2024, with a dedicated budget of 5 million pesos for Biodiversity Conservation Research and Development.

As a biologist, Sir Gab, meticulously curates a diverse collection of these unique species, each distinguished by its individual characteristics. This compendium is thoughtfully compiled into an elaborate catalog, showcasing the rich diversity and distinctive features of each species.

The event drew representatives from Valladolid, Pulupandan, Hinigaran, Binalbagan, Himamaylan City, and Kabankalan City, along with PEMO, USLS, CHMSU, and CPSU. Ms. Rusiel Escanilla Placio served as the event's emcee, inviting everyone to visit the East Bridgeway and join in the celebration of Negrense biodiversity.

The said activity was a collaborative effort of the Province of Negros Occidental, Abanse Negrense, Provincial Environment Management Office, Central Philippines State University, the Philippine Biodiversity Conservation Foundation, and SM City Bacolod, with Mr. Aldwin Legaspi spearheading the event on behalf of Atty. Julie Ann A. Bedrio. CPSU further extends its gratitude to NOCWAMA members, CPSU, and SM City for their support.

The university's involvement in this event emphasized its proactive engagement in advancing environmental education and fostering the conservation of wildlife and biodiversity. Furthermore, it highlighted the institution's commitment to cultivating a culture of environmental stewardship.
