Today is not like any other day. On June 12, 1898, the Philippines declared its independence from Spanish colonial rule. More than a century has passed since that historic moment, and with time, the significance of this day risks being overshadowed or forgotten.
Nowadays, commemorations and remembrance of our own history are being depicted as general work days, free from work, or vacation. However this mindset just proves the main problem, the challenge to keep the real meaning of these dates and pass it beyond other generations.
The freedom we enjoy today did not come with ease, it came with a cost. Countless Filipinos gave up their comfort, safety, and even their own lives to secure the independence that we now often take for granted.
So how can Generation Z embody and embrace the significance of Independence Day? It is not simply by remembering the date, but by knowing and understanding why the day matters. This day is a chance to reflect and see the real meaning behind our history. How our freedom was built, why it was necessary, and what it continues to mean for us today. From that understanding comes appreciation, and from appreciation comes action.
Honoring our history does not require grand gestures and remembering the sacrifices of those who came before us should not feel like a burden. What is truly devastating is allowing their struggles and achievements to fade from memory.
Just as our ancestors once fought against oppression, Filipinos today continue to face challenges such as corruption, poverty, and social issues against the hands of the superiors. This caused us to be enclosed in a cage we shouldn't be in, in the first place. But unlike those who fought with weapons and blades, we can raise our stance using the democracy we gained through our ancestors. We can use our freedom to speak, the right to vote, and the ability to stay informed.
Let us not lock ourselves away from the real meaning behind this important milestone. Let us carry the weight of radiating the lesson of being independent, because our freedom was fought for us to live and uphold, not merely remember and we bear the duty to carry it forward with pride.

In celebration of the 128th Philippine Independence Day on June 12, 2026, protesters gathered along Kalaw Avenue, Manila, to express calls against the stateโs cooperation with the United States regarding Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) sites and the Pax Silica initiative.
They raised concerns linking these issues to Philippine sovereignty, calling for genuine independence and freedom for all Filipinos, while also demanding accountability and reforms on issues affecting different sectors of society.
