𝐁𝐀𝐈𝐒-𝐆𝐒𝐃 𝐒𝐨𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐚𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐑 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐚

Three sophomore students of the Bachelor of Arts in International Studies – Global Sustainable Development (BAIS-GSD) program of Central Luzon State University (CLSU) are set to present their research at the 5th Biennial International Conference on International Relations (ICON-IR) and the 20th Congress of the Asian Political and International Studies Association (APISA), to be held at Parahyangan Catholic University in Bandung, Indonesia, on August 20–21, 2026.

Mark Adrian Tiongson (BAIS-GSD 2-1) with Ms. Angelika Leaño of the Department of Social Sciences will present their research paper focusing on contemporary challenges in international relations and maritime security. Meanwhile, Raphael Javier and Patrick Andres (BAIS-GSD 2-1) will present a separate research paper examining youth political expression and the use of online platforms in engaging with political ideas.

Also joining them are two students from the Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences program, Jose Rajee Ramiscal and Glenn Bede Francis Panday, who will participate in the international academic event.

The participation marks a significant milestone for the BAIS-GSD program, as Tiongson, Javier, and Andres are the first BAIS-GSD students to travel abroad and present their research at an international academic conference.

Launched in 2025, the BAIS-GSD is CLSU’s newest undergraduate program, with its pioneering batch now in their second year. The program provides students with an interdisciplinary foundation in international affairs, global issues, diplomacy, sustainability, and cross-cultural engagement.

Their participation in ICON-IR and APISA highlights the program’s early commitment to research and internationalization, giving its students opportunities to engage with scholars, researchers, and fellow students from across Asia.

As the students make their way to Indonesia, the Department of Global Studies looks forward to their presentations and to this important milestone in the continuing growth of the BAIS-GSD program.

𝐃𝐆𝐒 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐲 𝐌𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐆𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐀𝐒𝐄𝐀𝐍 𝐋𝐚𝐰 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐍𝐔𝐒 𝐀𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐲

Dr. Ella Joy Avellanoza-Ponce of the Department of Global Studies participated in the ASEAN Law and Policy Academy 2026 – Educator Programme, organized by the Centre for International Law (CIL) of the National University of Singapore (NUS), from July 27 to 31, 2026, at the NUS Kent Ridge Campus in Singapore.

Dr. Ponce was selected to participate in the program with a full scholarship, which included a program fee waiver and travel support. The five-day academy brought together educators, practitioners, legal experts, and scholars to deepen participants’ understanding of ASEAN law, regional governance, and policy. Sessions covered ASEAN legal frameworks and institutions, treaties, dispute settlement mechanisms, economic integration, energy governance, and ASEAN’s responses to regional and global challenges.

As part of the program, Dr. Ponce participated in the ASEAN and Foreign Relations Specialization, which featured discussions on ASEAN as an actor in international fora, the Law of the Sea, regional architecture, and environmental and climate change issues. These sessions provided important perspectives on ASEAN’s evolving role in regional and international affairs and complemented her teaching and research interests in International Relations and Southeast Asian studies.

The Educator Programme also provided sessions specifically designed to strengthen the teaching and research capacities of academics, including Essentials of Research, Publication, Conferencing and Teaching ASEAN Integration, followed by discussions and a practicum on ASEAN dispute settlement and international legal institutions.

Dr. Ponce’s participation in the ASEAN Law and Policy Academy contributes to CLSU’s continuing efforts to strengthen the international exposure of its faculty and enrich the teaching of International Studies through contemporary perspectives on ASEAN regionalism, law, governance, and international cooperation.

The Department of Global Studies (DGS) continues to strengthen its international engagement as two of its faculty members have been selected to participate in separate international workshops to be held at the National University of Singapore (NUS) this year.

𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐜. 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟. 𝐃𝐫. 𝐄𝐥𝐥𝐚 𝐉𝐨𝐲 𝐏𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞, faculty member of DGS and Chief of the Engagement and Collaboration Division of the International Affairs Office (IAO), has been selected to participate in the 𝐀𝐒𝐄𝐀𝐍 𝐋𝐚𝐰 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲 𝐀𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔: 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐒𝐄𝐀𝐍 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐑𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, organized by the Centre for International Law (CIL) at the National University of Singapore. The program will be held from July 27 to 31, 2026.

The highly competitive program brings together educators and professionals across the ASEAN region to deepen their understanding of ASEAN institutions, regional governance, and contemporary foreign relations. As part of her selection, the Centre for International Law will provide a full programme fee waiver worth SGD 1,500 and a fixed travel stipend of SGD 800 to support her participation in Singapore.

Meanwhile, 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐜. 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟. 𝐊𝐞𝐧 𝐆. 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐠, Chair of the Department of Global Studies, has been selected to participate in the 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐀𝐬𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐥 (𝐒𝐄𝐀𝐋𝐂) 𝐋𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩, which will also be held at the National University of Singapore from September 18 to 20, 2026.

The workshop aims to equip participants with practical skills in developing authentic listening materials for Southeast Asian language instruction while fostering collaboration among SEA language educators and specialists across the region. The organizers will provide accommodation and a modest allowance for all selected participants.

The selection of Assoc. Prof. Ponce and Assoc. Prof. Calang reflects the growing international recognition of the Department of Global Studies and its commitment to academic excellence, regional cooperation, and faculty development. Their participation in these prestigious workshops is expected to contribute to the enhancement of instruction, research, and internationalization initiatives within the department and the University.

𝐈𝐍 𝐏𝐇𝐎𝐓𝐎𝐒 | 𝐃𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝟏 & 𝟐

The first two days of 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐀 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥 have been filled with meaningful conversations, creative activities, and powerful storytelling.

Students from BA International Studies - Global Sustainable Development and BS Development Communication shared their lived experiences of climate change—from stronger typhoons and flooding to the everyday realities faced by their families and communities. These stories reminded us that while climate change is a global challenge, it is experienced in deeply personal ways, and every story shared has the power to inspire empathy, dialogue, and action.

The festival is co-facilitated by the Department of Global Studies, Central Luzon State University (CLSU) in collaboration with The University of Melbourne’s SWISP Living Lab and Science Gallery Melbourne, together with partners from Pampanga State Agricultural University (PSAU) and India.

We look forward to continuing these conversations during tomorrow’s online session with additional participants from the PhD Development Communication program.

We extend our sincere thanks to the CLSU International Studio for serving as the venue for our synchronous online sessions, connecting participants from CLSU, PSAU, and Australia as we continue learning, reflecting, and exchanging climate stories across borders.

For three days, the festival will serve as a space where participants from the Philippines (CLSU and PSAU), India, and Australia connect through stories, creativity, and dialogue to deepen conversations on climate justice.
