🦞 A Day in the Backyard Farm

Welcome to another day at In the Hides! 🌿🦞

A quick look around the backyard farm means checking the tanks, observing the crayfish, and making sure everything is running as it should.

From the grow-out tanks to the smaller setups, every day brings something different. Sometimes it's feeding time, sometimes maintenance, and sometimes it's simply taking a moment to see what the crayfish are up to.

You never really know what you'll find beneath the water. 👀🦞

A crayfish exploring...

One hiding inside its favorite shelter...

Or maybe a new surprise waiting to be discovered.

This is the everyday journey of raising Australian Redclaw Crayfish in the backyard—one tank, one observation, and one day at a time.

🌿🦞 Welcome to a day in my backyard farm.

🦞 5 Things ARC Need to Thrive

Australian Redclaw Crayfish may be hardy, but they still need the right environment to grow and thrive. Here are 5 important things to keep in mind:

💧 1. Clean, Stable Water
Good water quality is the foundation of a healthy ARC setup. Regular maintenance and stable conditions help keep your crayfish healthy.

🏠 2. Plenty of Hiding Places
ARC love to hide! Shelters such as pipes, rocks, and other safe hides give them security—especially during molting.

🍽️ 3. Proper Nutrition
A balanced and varied diet supports healthy growth, molting, and overall condition.

🌡️ 4. A Suitable Environment
Water temperature, oxygen, space, and overall tank or pond conditions all play an important role in helping ARC thrive.

🦞 5. Enough Space
Crayfish can be territorial. Giving them enough room and adequate shelter can help reduce stress and unwanted conflicts.

Keeping ARC is a continuous learning journey. The better we understand their needs, the better environment we can create for them. 🌿🦞

Which of these do you think is the most important?

🦞 Why Do Crayfish Hide?

Ever wonder why your crayfish seems to disappear all the time? 👀🦞

Crayfish love to hide—and there's a good reason for it.

🏠 They feel safer. Hiding places give them protection and a space where they can feel secure.

🦞 They need privacy when molting. After shedding their old shell, a crayfish becomes soft and vulnerable, so a safe hiding spot is especially important.

⚔️ They avoid conflict. Crayfish can be territorial, and having enough hides can help them avoid each other.

🌿 It's simply natural behavior. In the wild, crayfish use rocks, burrows, plants, and other cover as shelter.

In these photos, you can spot one of my ARC enjoying the cover of its surroundings. Sometimes, the best way to see a crayfish…

…is to look where it loves to hide. 🦞🌿

🦞 Meet the Crayfish!

Meet one of the residents of In the Hides! 🦞

This is an Australian Redclaw Crayfish (Cherax quadricarinatus)—with its beautiful blue claws, long antennae, and armored body.

And there’s more happening beneath those claws than meets the eye. From exploring and hiding to molting, breeding, and carrying eggs, every crayfish has a story to tell.

Over the next few posts, you'll get to meet more of the crayfish living in my backyard.

Welcome to the world beneath the hides. 🦞🌿

🦞 What Exactly Is an Australian Redclaw Crayfish?

Meet one of the stars of In the Hides — the Australian Redclaw Crayfish, scientifically known as Cherax quadricarinatus. 🦞

At first glance, you might think it's just a freshwater lobster.

But the more time you spend observing them, the more interesting they become.

Australian Redclaw Crayfish, often called ARC or simply Redclaw, are freshwater crayfish native to northern Australia and parts of Papua New Guinea. Their name comes from the distinctive red patch found on the claws of mature males.

What makes them fascinating is that they are not only interesting to keep and observe—they also have characteristics that make them appealing for backyard farming.

🌱 Why are Redclaws interesting for backyard farming?

🦞 They can grow to a good size
Redclaws are among the larger freshwater crayfish species, making them especially interesting for people exploring small-scale aquaculture.

🌡️ They are relatively hardy
With the right water conditions, temperature, oxygen, food, and shelter, they can adapt well to carefully managed outdoor or backyard systems.

🍽️ They are omnivores
Their diet can include a variety of plant and animal-based foods, which makes feeding an interesting part of their care and management.

🏠 They can be raised in different setups
Depending on your available space and goals, they may be kept in ponds, tanks, tubs, or other properly designed aquaculture systems.

🔍 They are fascinating to observe
From hiding and exploring to molting, competing for shelter, carrying eggs, and raising young—there is always something happening beneath the water.

But here's the thing...

Keeping Australian Redclaw Crayfish is not as simple as putting a few crayfish in a container and waiting for them to grow.

There is still plenty to understand about:

💧 Water quality
🏠 Shelter and hiding spaces
🍽️ Feeding
🦞 Stocking density
🌡️ Temperature
🧬 Breeding
🔄 Molting and survival

And that is exactly what In the Hides is all about.

This page will document my own journey of keeping and learning about Australian Redclaw Crayfish in a backyard setting—the successes, mistakes, experiments, surprises, and everything in between.

Whether you're thinking about starting your own ARC setup or you're simply curious about these amazing creatures, come follow the journey.

🦞 Why I Started Keeping Australian Redclaw Crayfish in My Backyard

It started with curiosity.

What began as an interest in Australian Redclaw Crayfish (ARC) slowly turned into a backyard hobby that I genuinely enjoy. I became fascinated by these little creatures—their behavior, growth, breeding, and the challenge of creating an environment where they can thrive.

But along the way, I realized that keeping crayfish isn't simply about putting them in a tank and feeding them.

There is a lot to learn. 💧🦞🌱

Water quality, shelter, feeding, stocking, molting, breeding, temperature, maintenance—and even the little things you don't expect to encounter—are all part of the journey.

That's why I created In the Hides.

This page is where I'll document my backyard ARC journey—the things that work, the things that don't, the lessons I learn, and the experiences that come with raising them.

You can expect:

🦞 Backyard ARC Farming – sharing my actual setup and experiences
🌱 Tips & Techniques – things I've learned along the way
💧 Water & Tank Management – keeping a healthy environment
🍽️ Feeding & Growth – what I observe as they develop
🥚 Breeding & Reproduction – documenting the process
🔍 Behavior & Observations – the fascinating things crayfish do
📸 Behind-the-Scenes Updates – the real, everyday backyard journey
❌ Mistakes & Lessons Learned – because not everything goes according to plan

I'm not here to pretend I know everything.

I'm here to learn, experiment, document, and share the journey.

If you're already keeping Australian Redclaw Crayfish, thinking about starting, or simply fascinated by these amazing creatures, I hope you'll join me.

Welcome to In the Hides. 🦞🌿

Let's learn, grow, and raise some crayfish together.
