Qualifications:
✔ With MS or MS Units
✔ With BS Degree in Marine Biology or Fisheries
✔ Preferably with experience in multi-species fisheries research
✔ Proficient in scientific writing and data analysis of socio-economic and fisheries data

We are excited to introduce the newly DOST PCAARRD funded program, "Socio-Ecological Assessment of Invertebrate Gleaning Fisheries in the Philippines Towards Evidence-Based Sustainable Resource Governance", also known as the "GleanPhil Program", led by Dr. Venus E. Leopardas of Mindanao State University at Naawan. This program aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the socio-economic, cultural, demographic, and ecological dynamics of invertebrate gleaning fisheries in the Philippines, generating essential data to inform sustainable resource governance.

This initiative is a collaborative research effort involving several institutions across the country. Cooperating agencies include Western Philippines University (WPU), University of the Philippines Diliman – Marine Science Institute, University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV), Visayas State University (Main Campus), and Mindanao State University-Tawi-Tawi College of Technology and Oceanography. Additionally, the National Consortium for Small-Scale Fisheries Research and Development in the Philippines (TBTI-Philippines), the Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) at both national and regional levels (Region I, Region IVB, Region VI, Region VIII, Region X), and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Agrarian Reform of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (MAFAR-BARMM) – Tawi-Tawi are also key partners in this collaborative effort.

The program consists of three key projects:

Project 1: Gleaning Fisheries as a Valuable Food System: Socio-demographics, Fisheries Production, Food Security, and Nutrition of Coastal Communities (Project Lead: Dr. Venus E. Leopardas - MSU at Naawan)
Project 2: Gleaning Habitat and Biodiversity Assessment and Biology of Commercially Exploited Marine Invertebrates (Project Lead: Dr. Karen A. Villarta-Lane - UPV)
Project 3: Value Chain and Governance Assessment of Gleaning Fisheries in the Philippines (Project Lead: Dr. Alice Joan G. Ferrer - UPV)

Together, these projects aim to create a holistic understanding of the importance of invertebrate gleaning fisheries and provide valuable insights for the sustainable management and governance of marine resources in the Philippines!
