The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, Innovation, and Global Engagement invites all faculty, researchers, and staff of MSU at Naawan to submit proposals for the 2027 Inhouse Research and Extension Funding.
Aligned with the 𝘙𝘐𝘐𝘋𝘌 𝘈𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘢, the 2027 𝘊𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘌𝘹𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘢𝘭𝘴 provides a valuable opportunity to contribute to innovative and impactful initiatives across various priority areas.

MSU at Naawan, PSA Strengthen Data Literacy and Evidence-Based Decision-Making Among Local Government Units

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) Region X, through the Provincial Statistical Office - Misamis Oriental headed by Chief Statistical Specialist Maria Liza M. Bigornia, in collaboration with the Mindanao State University at Naawan through the DARES Center, successfully conducted a Basic Statistics Training from February 18–20, 2026, at the Pearlmont Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City. This intensive capacity-building initiative was designed to empower 14 participating Local Government Units—including Alubijid, El Salvador, Gitagum, Initao, Laguindingan, Libertad, Lugait, Manticao, Naawan, Opol, Tagoloan, Villanueva, Cagayan de Oro City, and PLGU-Misamis Oriental—in the strategic integration and utilization of Community-Based Monitoring System (CBMS) data for local planning. Facilitated by expert faculty members from the Department of Physical Sciences and Mathematics, namely Vice Chancellor Frederick B. Cabactulan, Floremie Bagayna Apdian, MSc., and Claire Joy G. Mariquit, MSc., the training provided the essential statistical baseline needed for LGUs to transform raw data into evidence-based governance and sustainable community development.

Strengthening Internship Learning Through Advanced Fisheries and Marine Science Lecture Series

MSU at Naawan successfully concluded a ten-day lecture series aimed at enriching the internship experience of over 150 on-the-job trainees (OJTs) from state universities and colleges (SUCs) across Mindanao. Conducted as a major component of the University’s Internship Program, the series complemented the interns’ hands-on training in MSUN’s laboratories, hatcheries, grow-out ponds, and research projects.

Organized by the Develops, Adopts, Responds, and Encourages (DARES) Center, the initiative deepened the interns’ understanding of emerging scientific advancements, research innovations, and best practices in fisheries and marine sciences. Faculty members from the College of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (CFMS), the College of Environment and Life Sciences (CELS), and project-based researchers served as resource persons, sharing expertise drawn from active fieldwork and ongoing scientific studies.

Held between July 14 to July 30, 2025, the lecture series featured a comprehensive lineup of topics that highlighted MSUN’s research leadership in the aquatic sciences. Sessions covered:

By participating in the lecture series, the interns gained a unique combination of hands-on experience and research-based knowledge. MSU at Naawan continues to lead in aquatic science education, equipping students with the skills needed to excel in fisheries, environmental management, and the wider marine science field, while preparing the next generation of professionals to address real-world challenges in aquatic ecosystems.

MSUN Leads Capacity-Building Workshop on Feed Formulation to Promote Sustainable Practices in Aquaculture

To advance sustainable aquaculture practices in Misamis Oriental, Mindanao State University at Naawan (MSUN) spearheaded a Training Workshop on Feed Formulation for Sustainable Aquatic Livestock Production on November 6, 2025, held at the MSUN DARES Center Audio Visual Room. The event gathered agriculture and fisheries technicians and tilapia growers from the municipalities of Magsaysay, Balingasag, Gingoog City, Naawan, Manticao, and Lugait in Misamis Oriental.

The participants were warmly welcomed by Dr. Rey Y. Capangpangan, Vice Chancellor for Research, Innovation, and Global Engagement, who underscored MSUN’s steadfast commitment to sustainable development and community empowerment. He highlighted the University’s continuous efforts to uplift local communities by providing livelihood opportunities and capacity-building initiatives anchored on science-based and inclusive approaches.

The morning session featured lectures from Kezia Esther T. Abal, MSc, RFP, faculty member of the College of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, who discussed the theoretical foundations of feed formulation and fish nutrition. Abal emphasized the importance of utilizing locally available raw materials to promote cost-effective and environmentally responsible aquaculture practices.

In the afternoon, participants applied their newly gained knowledge through a hands-on feed formulation activity facilitated by Jhon Wary E. Repamonte, MSc, RFP, a researcher who guided them in the actual preparation of aquaculture feeds. Both Abal and Repamonte are former researchers of the DOST-PCAARRD-funded project titled “Utilization of Fruit Processing Waste as a Source of Prebiotics and Immunostimulants for the Development of Healthy and Improved Aquaculture Feeds.” Their expertise provided participants with practical insights into developing sustainable feeds using indigenous materials.

Adding to the day’s learning sessions, Mr. Karem A. Palmes, Head of the Technology Business Incubation (TBI) Unit, introduced the participants to technology incubation and discussed the various forms of support that MSUN can offer to individuals aiming to develop and grow their innovative ideas into sustainable, income-generating ventures. His session encouraged participants to explore opportunities for innovation and entrepreneurship in aquaculture and related industries.

In her closing remarks, Dr. Aida D. Perpetua, Director of the DARES Center, urged participants to apply the knowledge and skills gained from the workshop in their respective communities. She highlighted that formulating feeds using locally available ingredients can significantly reduce production costs and enhance the sustainability of tilapia farming operations.

The training workshop reflects MSUN’s ongoing commitment to strengthening partnerships with local stakeholders and promoting sustainable, science-based, and inclusive aquaculture development across Misamis Oriental.

MSUN Distributes Tilapia Farming Inputs to Support Naawan Farmers

To help promote food security and livelihood opportunities in the community, Mindanao State University at Naawan, through the DARES Center, distributed tilapia farming inputs to selected Naawanon farmers on October 30, 2025.

A total of seven (7) farmers received high-quality tilapia fingerlings and aquafeeds good for one cropping cycle. This initiative aims to support backyard fish farming, giving local farmers an additional source of income and helping ensure food supply in their households and the community.

Present during the distribution were Ms. Sherely Ann T. Inocente, Executive Secretary from the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, Innovation, and Global Engagement; Hon. Farley Duremdez, Sangguniang Bayan Member of LGU-Naawan; and Dr. Aida D. Perpetua, Director of the DARES Center. Their participation shows MSUN’s strong partnership with the local government in supporting agricultural development in Naawan.

Also, Ms. Florence B. Arnoco from the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) conducted a short orientation on crop, livestock, and fishery insurance. She explained how farmers can protect their livelihood from losses caused by pests, diseases, and natural calamities.

Through this program, MSUN continues to show its commitment to helping the community, empowering farmers, and promoting sustainable and resilient food systems in Naawan.
