Last April 22, 2026, the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, through the UPV Museum of Natural Sciences, celebrated Earth Day with a coastal clean-up initiative.

The activity was supported by volunteers from UPV Pahinungod/OC (UP/OC), staff from the Institute of Marine Fisheries and Oceanology, CFOS, UPV (IMFO), of Aquaculture(IA), and the National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (NIMBB), along with CFOS students and several residents of Miag-ao including two environmentally conscious kids. Through this collective effort to protect our resources, reduce waste and preserve the beauty of our nature, approximately 3,000 pieces of waste were collected. Most of these were packaging materials, including food wrappers (524), PET bottles (360), plastic fragments smaller than 2.5 cm (352), and plastic cups and plates (319), among others such as alcoholic beverage bottles.

Our coast is not only a vital ecosystem—it’s also a place where we can relax and unwind and a sunny afternoon picnic at the OWL area can be truly refreshing. Let’s make sure others can enjoy it just the same. Please take your trash with you and help keep the area clean, always—across all ecosystems.

Again, the UPV MNS extends its heartfelt gratitude to everyone who dedicated a little of their time and effort to turn awareness into action, Happy EARTH MONTH.

PS. One participant actually celebrated his birthday with a cause. Thank you.
