The training activity “𝘍𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤 𝘍𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘋𝘳𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘔𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘥𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘵𝘰 𝘌𝘷𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘮,” conducted on April 17, 2026, at the Regional Research Center – Food, Feeds, and Functional Nutrition Laboratory, brought together students, researchers, and industry stakeholders for an in-depth introduction to the basic operations and instrumentation of 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐳𝐞 𝐝𝐫𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 and 𝐬𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐲 𝐝𝐫𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 technologies.

The program featured lectures, demonstration videos, and hands-on equipment demonstrations, providing participants with both theoretical foundations and practical insights into food drying techniques and product evaluation.

The UPV Regional Research Center – 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐝, 𝐅𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐍𝐮𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐋𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 extends its appreciation to all participants and facilitators for contributing to the success of this activity.

The UPV Regional Research Center Food, Feeds, and Functional Nutrition Laboratory, successfully conducted “𝗔 𝗣𝗼𝘂𝗿-𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁: 𝗔𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗟𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗱 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵” last November 21, 2025.

In collaboration with 𝐋𝐚𝐛𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬, 𝐈𝐧𝐜., the training equipped participants with foundational skills in proper pipetting ergonomics, efficient pipetting techniques, pipette maintenance, and laboratory water classification and applications.

We welcomed various participants—including UPV and non-UP faculty members, students, and researchers—who took part in both lecture and hands-on sessions delivered by our resource speaker, 𝙈𝙨. 𝙀𝙣𝙨𝙝𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙚 𝙁𝙧𝙞𝙖𝙨, Product Specialist from LabTraders, Inc.

Participants also completed an online quiz via the Sartorius platform, with the top three scorers receiving special tokens. The training concluded with an engaging Q&A and sharing of best practices.

𝐉𝐔𝐒𝐓 𝐈𝐍: 𝐑𝐑𝐂 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫

The UPV Regional Research Center (RRC) welcomes its newly appointed Director, Professor Sharon N. Nuñal, PhD. She will serve a three-year term, from September 1, 2025, to August 31, 2028.

Dr. Nuñal is a Professor at the Institute of Fish Processing Technology, College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas(IFPT–CFOS). She specializes in microbiology, molecular biology, fish quality and safety, and fisheries biochemistry. She earned her BS in Fisheries at UP Visayas, pursued an MSc in Bioresources Science at Mie University in Japan, and later obtained a PhD in Fisheries Science at Kagoshima University, also in Japan. Before her appointment at the UPV RRC, Dr. Nuñal served as Director of the IFPT–CFOS.

Her vision for the RRC is anchored on the Center’s original mission—to evolve into a dynamic and advanced research institution in the Philippines, recognized globally as a leader in fisheries, aquatic sciences, and allied disciplines research and development. She emphasized: “I would like to steer RRC towards becoming a recognized leader and innovator in aquatic and allied sciences research and development, not just in the Philippines but also in the Asia-Pacific region, through the establishment of national and international linkages and partnerships.”

During her term, Dr. Nuñal aims to help the UPV RRC and its stakeholders realize the Center’s vision of becoming fully operational and self-sustaining by 2029, ensuring its long-term capacity to fulfill its mandate. She also shared: “I envision RRC as the University’s strongest support facility—providing state-of-the-art resources, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and advancing UPV’s degree programs and research agenda.”
This direction reflects her commitment to making the Center more accessible to diverse clients within the University and the broader community through stakeholder engagement and participatory management.

Overall, Dr. Nuñal envisions the UPV RRC as a hub for collaborative scientific research that generates transformative solutions to global challenges while fostering inclusive progress.

Excess moisture in food is one of the biggest contributors to spoilage and reduced shelf life. Food drying technologies address this by preventing microbial growth, preserving freshness, and reducing post-harvest losses—while also making seasonal commodities available year-round.

To respond to the growing need for effective drying solutions, the UP Visayas Regional Research Center (RRC), through the Food, Feeds, and Functional Nutrition Laboratory, conducted a short course on September 10, 2025. The training featured lectures and equipment demonstrations designed to:
✅ Deepen understanding of post-harvest drying techniques and evaluation methods
✅ Provide equipment operation demonstrations for freeze and spray drying
✅ Offer a platform for collaboration and facility use planning

This activity forms part of the Technical Assistance Extension Program (TAEP): Realizing Research Capacities for Sustainable Food and Community (RRC SFC)—an initiative conceptualized not only to support researchers, but also to:
🌱 Promote interdisciplinary collaboration, resource sharing, and academic partnerships across UPV and beyond
🌱 Foster innovation, creativity, and linkages for applied research and technologies
🌱 Equip stakeholders with transferrable technical and analytical skills
🌱 Standardize research methods and protocols for the Asia-Pacific region

Through this program, UPV-RRC envisions becoming a regional leader in inclusive, capacity-enhancing, and research-driven development—transforming ideas into solutions that benefit both academia and the wider community.

We’re excited to share that the Food, Feeds, & Functional Nutrition Laboratory, together with our collaborators from the Institute of Fish Processing Technology and Institute of Aquaculture, College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, has just published a new article on the 𝐝𝐫𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝘾𝙝𝙡𝙤𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙡𝙖 𝙨𝙤𝙧𝙤𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙞𝙖𝙣𝙖. 🌿

This collab was made possible through the Realizing Research Capacities extension program of the UPV Regional Research Center, and our DOST-PCAARRD GIA-funded project titled “Production and Evaluation of Dried Microalgal Biomass for Improved Shelf-life and Product Diversification”.

𝑯𝑶𝑻 𝑶𝑭𝑭 𝑻𝑯𝑬 𝑷𝑹𝑬𝑺𝑺!- The Food, Feeds, & Functional Nutrition Laboratory², through Dr. Jade G. Pahila, together with its collaborators from the UPV College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences - Institute of Fish Processing Technology (IFPT)¹ and Visayas - Institute of Aquaculture (IA)³ recently published a journal article on the drying techniques of 𝐶ℎ𝑙𝑜𝑟𝑒𝑙𝑙𝑎 𝑠𝑜𝑟𝑜𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑖𝑎𝑛𝑎.

This collaboration is made possible through the Realizing Research Capacities extension program of the UPV Regional Research Center implemented by the FFFN Laboratory and the DOST PCAARRD GIA-funded project of the same laboratory entitled "Production and Evaluation of Dried Microalgal Biomass for Improved Shelf-life and Product Diversification" implemented from July 01, 2022 - March 31, 2025.
