Davao Oriental State University (DOrSU) and the City Government of Mati have formalized a partnership through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) to promote halal tourism and inclusive hospitality services in the region. The agreement was signed today, November 18, by DOrSU President Dr. Roy G. Ponce and Mati City Mayor Hon. Michelle N. Rabat in Mati City, Davao Oriental.
Under the agreement, DOrSU, through its Center for Tourism Information, Education, and Communication (CTIEC), led by Dr. Rose Anelyn V. Ceniza, along with relevant academic programs, will provide technical expertise, oversee project implementation, and spearhead public awareness campaigns for halal tourism. This collaboration supports Mati Cityโs Halal Ordinance No. 555, Series of 2023, which advocates for sustainable and inclusive tourism while honoring Muslim traditions.
The City Tourism and Promotions Office, headed by City Tourism Officer Dashiel E. Indelible Jr., has committed to facilitating project beneficiaries and assisting in the creation of campaign materials. Both parties aim to strengthen research and extension initiatives to advance community development and sustainable tourism efforts.

Davao Oriental State University (DOrSU) concluded its World Tourism Day 2024 celebration with a grand finale on September 30. Following a successful kickoff the previous week, the recent festivities showcased DOrSU's commitment to regenerative tourism anchored on its regenerative futures vision.
Organized by the Center for Tourism Information, Education, and Communication, under the leadership of Dr. Rose Anelyn V. Ceniza, in collaboration with the Hospitality Management (HM) Program, the event featured a series of competitions that showcased the talents of HM students across all year levels.
Participants demonstrated their skills in Tour Guiding, Culinary Arts, Buffet Skirting, Buffet Centerpiece Design, Painting, and Food Photography.The students also took pride in showcasing their cultural heritage by modeling traditional attire and displaying their creativity through innovative booth designs.
The celebration was further enriched with a lecture delivered by faculty-researcher Ms. Amy G. Ponce, who discussed about "Restoring Degraded Marine Ecosystems in Pujada Bay, Philippines." Ms. Ponce highlighted the significant role that Pujada Bay plays in boosting local tourism, having earned a spot as one of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World. She cited DOrSU's recent initiativeโthe establishment of the Eco-Engineered Artificial Reef System in Pujada Bay, which is implemented through the Regional Integrated Coastal Resource Management Center XI in partnership with rrreefs, a Swiss socio-ecological impact organization. Ms. Ponce further emphasized the vital role of safeguarding environmental and natural ecosystems as the cornerstone for regenerative tourism development.
The event also highlighted the province's rich cultural heritage through captivating presentations that showcased traditional music, dance, and attire. These performances underscored the importance of preserving local customs and traditions as essential components of the tourism experience.
This yearโs celebration was made possible through the collaboration of DOrSU with its longtime external partners, including the City Tourism Office of Mati, the Provincial Tourism Office of Davao Oriental, the Bangsamoro Youth Association, and the Davao Oriental Bangsamoro Halal Consumers Cooperative.
As DOrSU continues to champion regenerative futures, it reaffirms its commitment to driving tourism development that fosters both socio-economic progress and environmental stewardship. By integrating regenerative practices into its tourism initiatives, DOrSU is contributing to a more resilient and equitable future for Davao Oriental.

DOrSU Marks World Tourism Day with Halal Literacy and Food Safety Orientation
Davao Oriental State University (DOrSU), through the Tourism Information, Education, and Communication Center, led by Director Dr. Rose Anelyn V. Ceniza, marked World Tourism Day today, September 25, by focusing on halal literacy and sustainable tourism. The event, held at the University Library, kicked off with a Halal Literacy Assessment and lectures on responsible tourism practices.
Dr. Misael B. Clapano, Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Extension, representing DOrSU President Dr. Roy G. Ponce, welcomed the participants and emphasized the importance of sustainable tourism for the future of local communities. Mati City Tourism Officer Mr. Dashiel E. Indelible Jr. highlighted the role of tourism in driving both economic and cultural growth.
One of the main highlights was Asst. Prof. Djhoanna S. Mamaโs talk on how tourism has positively impacted the Ka'agan communities in Dahican, illustrating how regenerative tourism benefits both the environment and local livelihoods.
The event also included a session on halal food regulations, presented by Mr. Anacleto Macatabog and Hon. Xander Paul Alcantara. This was followed by practical training on food handling, led by Ms. Norenne T. Maybano and Prof. Anne Catherine T. Padilla, along with food packaging strategies from Ms. Donna Faye Labadan and Mr. Eric E. Sarcia.
An open forum rounded off the day, with closing remarks from Provincial Tourism Officer Ms. Lyrna P. Padohinog.

Yesterday, May 23, 2024, the historic inauguration of the Mandaya Heritage Museum and the joyous reopening of Pusan Point Ecopark took place, igniting a wave of celebration and cultural pride across the province.
Dr. Id Acaylar, the Provincial Tourism Consultant, shed light on the arduous journey from conception to realization of the Mandaya Heritage Museum and Pusan Point Ecopark. He extended heartfelt gratitude to Governor Uy for championing the legacy of the late Governor Corazon Malanyaon and spearheading this transformative project.
Guest speaker, Jennifer Pia "Limpayen" Sibug-Las, Chairperson of the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples, represented by the Community Service Center Head NCIP Davao Oriental Provincial Office, Mr. Edwin Padilla, emphasized the significance of the Mandaya Heritage Museum as a beacon of cultural preservation and a bridge between generations.
Governor Uy, brimming with pride, recalled the passionate dedication of the late Governor Malanyaon and extended warm gratitude to all guests for their presence. He invited everyone to embark on a journey through the vibrant tapestry of Davao Oriental's culture and tradition, symbolized by the Mandaya Heritage Museum.

Inay Samporonia's dedication exemplifies the rich cultural heritage that the Mandaya people continue to preserve and pass on to future generations.
