Mindanao State University – Marawi continues to strengthen its presence in the field of marine biodiversity research as its faculty members co-author another international publication that unveils a 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐝 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐧 𝐈𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝, Mindanao.

The paper, titled “𝘈 𝘯𝘦𝘸 𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘥 𝘈𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘶𝘴𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘶𝘳𝘢 𝘤𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘨𝘶𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘴 𝘴𝘱. 𝘯. (𝘊𝘳𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘢: 𝘐𝘴𝘰𝘱𝘰𝘥𝘢: 𝘈𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘶𝘳𝘰𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘢) 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘊𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘨𝘶𝘪𝘯 𝘐𝘴𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥, 𝘗𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘱𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴”, was recently published in the 𝙎𝙘𝙤𝙥𝙪𝙨-𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙭𝙚𝙙 𝙅𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙤𝙛 𝙉𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙖𝙡 𝙃𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮 under Taylor & Francis Publications.

The study describes 𝘼𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙪𝙨𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙝𝙪𝙧𝙖 𝙘𝙖𝙢𝙞𝙜𝙪𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙨 𝘀𝗽. 𝗻., a new anthurid isopod collected from the shallow waters of 𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐧 𝐈𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝, representing the 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐮𝐬 𝘼𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙪𝙨𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙝𝙪𝙧𝙖 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬. This discovery also marks the 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐝 𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐝 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬 in the country, alongside 𝘊𝘰𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘶𝘳𝘢 𝘬𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘭𝘦𝘺𝘪 and 𝘚𝘵𝘺𝘨𝘰𝘤𝘺𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘶𝘳𝘢 𝘧𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘢.

Morphologically, 𝘈. 𝘤𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘨𝘶𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘴 resembles other species within the genus but can be distinguished by its unique pigmentation pattern and specific structural features of its pereopod, telson, and mandibular palp. The study also reports partial 18S and 28S rRNA gene sequences obtained from the holotype specimen, adding valuable molecular data to the taxonomy of the group.

This research was conducted through a collaboration between 𝐇𝐨𝐤𝐤𝐚𝐢𝐝𝐨 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐲𝐮𝐤𝐲𝐮𝐬, and 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐨 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 – 𝐌𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐬 (𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐰𝐢) under the project “𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐚𝐱𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬 (𝐒𝐓𝐌𝐈𝐏)”, led by 𝐃𝐫. 𝐉𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐞𝐥 𝐂. 𝐀𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐨 as principal investigator. The STMIP project aims to explore, describe, and document underexplored marine invertebrate species across the Philippine archipelago.

Among the authors are 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐜. 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟. 𝐖𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧 𝐆. 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐨𝐬 of the 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐅𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 (𝐂𝐅𝐀𝐒), 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐭. 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟. 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐞 𝐏. 𝐀𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐲 and 𝐌𝐬. 𝐌𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐞 𝐃. 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐝𝐞 of the 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬, who actively contribute to advancing taxonomic and biodiversity research in Mindanao.

The lead author, 𝐌𝐫. 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐤𝐢 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐤𝐢, 𝐌.𝐒𝐜., an anthuroidean taxonomist and doctoral student at Hokkaido University, was also recognized for his exemplary taxonomic work. The research team expressed its gratitude to the 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐆𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐧 for supporting the study. In honor of its origin, the new species was named 𝘼𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙪𝙨𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙝𝙪𝙧𝙖 𝙘𝙖𝙢𝙞𝙜𝙪𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙨 after Camiguin Island.

Mindanao State University – Marawi celebrates another scientific milestone as its faculty members published a research paper in the 𝙎𝙘𝙤𝙥𝙪𝙨-𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙭𝙚𝙙 𝙟𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙚 𝘽𝙞𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙮 𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙘𝙝. The publication highlights the discovery of 𝘽𝙖𝙨𝙚𝙤𝙙𝙞𝙨𝙘𝙪𝙨 𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙤𝙚𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙨 𝐀𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐨 & 𝐊𝐚𝐣𝐢𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚 𝐬𝐩. 𝐧𝐨𝐯., the 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐦 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐨, found in Misamis Oriental and Surigao del Sur. Another new species, 𝘽𝙖𝙨𝙚𝙤𝙙𝙞𝙨𝙘𝙪𝙨 𝙝𝙤𝙤𝙠𝙖𝙗𝙖𝙚 𝐀𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐨 & 𝐊𝐚𝐣𝐢𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚 𝐬𝐩. 𝐧𝐨𝐯., was also described from Kanagawa, Japan.

This new publication reaffirms MSU-Marawi’s commitment to advancing marine biodiversity and taxonomic research in the Philippines.
