UP Manila Commends Manila Health Department for Rapid Action on Antimicrobial Resistance Study

On April 30, 2026, the University of the Philippines Manila commended the Manila Health Department for its swift response and implementation of an action plan following a study conducted by the College of Public Health, University of the Philippines Manila on antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) bacteria found in beverages sold by street vendors in Tondo, Manila. The study identified the presence of harmful antimicrobial-resistant organisms in sampled drinks, highlighting a serious public health concern.

In response to the findings, the Manila Health Department deployed sanitary inspectors to monitor food safety practices and launched public awareness campaigns aimed at improving hygiene and sanitation among vendors and consumers. The coordinated response reflects a strong commitment to evidence-based public health action and risk mitigation.

The study, titled “Sip or skip?: Microbiological Assessment for Antimicrobial Resistant Bacteria in Beverage Contents, Containers, and Palm Swabs of Vendors in Tondo, Manila,” was conducted in 2024 by BS Public Health students under the supervision of Associate Professor Geraldine Dayrit and Assistant Professor Raycha Lei Sabandal, in collaboration with the One ARM Project 3 of the Department of Medical Microbiology of the College of Public Health. The research was supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Southeast Asia One Health University Network (SEAOHUN).

Laboratory results revealed the presence of antimicrobial-resistant gram-negative bacteria, including strains carrying ESBL genes, indicating significant public health risks. The findings underscore the urgency of strengthening food safety systems, hygiene practices, and antimicrobial resistance surveillance in informal food vending systems.

The study aligns with global concerns raised by the World Health Organization on antimicrobial resistance as a major public health threat, reinforcing the importance of a One Health approach integrating human, animal, and environmental health systems.
