Yesterday, we commemorated the 129th martyrdom anniversary of our national hero, Dr. José Rizal. Rizal’s life is a still pond in which we may cognize the depths of our education in the shadowed corridors of subjugation. Guided by a worldview that favored enlightenment over extremism, he believed that a nation could ascend to liberation only when its people cultivated critical thought and conscientious action.

Rizal understood that ignorance was the most insidious tool of colonial domination. Thus, he envisioned a reformed society shaped by educated citizens and sustained by a collective awakening to injustice. Learning became his placid yet puissant weapon to dismantle racial prejudice and affirm that Filipinos were equally capable of excellence in science, the arts, and philosophy. Rizal revived the gift of knowledge — and with it, the soul of a nation long denied its name.

Education, in Rizal’s conception, is far more than a personal attainment. It is, above all, a moral undertaking that imbues character with discipline, integrity, compassion, and social responsibility. In the same way that the University of the Philippines and the College of Allied Medical Professions immerse us in a pedagogy that transcends the classroom, Rizal calls us to interrogate the disguised, challenge the insensate, and consecrate our intellect to the service of the people.

As 𝘐𝘴𝘬𝘰𝘭𝘢𝘳 𝘯𝘨 𝘉𝘢𝘺𝘢𝘯, may we remain true to Rizal’s legacy by proving that even in our time, the struggle for sovereignty treads onward with an indomitable mind, a principled heart, and a quill of insight devoted to Filipinos over any privilege of the self.
