7 Stoic don'ts.

Just gonna leave this here.⁣
⁣
The more I learn, the more I realize:⁣
- protein is king⁣
- carbs are important but how much an individual ā€œneedsā€ varies ⁣
- fiber is important but how much an individual tolerates varies⁣
- food quality is important, but we also have to be mindful of budget/access⁣
- healthy fats are important, but going overboard with added fats and oils makes no sense from an energy balance and evolutionary standpoint unless you’re a starving hunter gatherer⁣
- everybody is different⁣
- single, food-borne nutrients contribute little to disease unless isolated from the food matrix, such as with added sugar, or unhealthy fats/oils⁣

What works for me may not work for you. That’s NOT to say that there are going to be dramatically different diet guidelines from one person to the next—that’s an oft exploited misconception. But, I may (for example) be well adapted to X grams of fiber a day; you may want/need less to feel good. I may enjoy alliums, or dairy; you might be stuck in the bathroom for hours after just a little cheese. There is no truly one-size fits all diet. ⁣

But overall nutrient density matters and our most nutrient dense foods tend to be animal sourced foods (Beal, et al. 2021). Fiber also seems to be important, as do myriad health-promoting phytochemicals such as flavonoids or carotenoids (if you know my work I talk a lot about these). And, fruit is delicious and should be eaten.⁣

Finally I guess I should say this pyramid was quickly thrown together and should not be viewed as gospel or a replacement of my more nuanced views as shared in my books and podcast but rather a template to look at, question, and explore. āœŒšŸ¼ā£
