By: Karl Paulie Anareta

The National University Men's Basketball Team pulled off an opening-day win after shocking the reigning UAAP champion DLSU, 70-64, in the 19th Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup on May 17 at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.

The Bulldogs fired up the first half with balanced ex*****on and defensive grit. The Green Archers tried to come from behind in the second period, but a steady counter-attack allowed NU to walk into the halftime break holding a slim lead, 32-28.

Late in the third quarter, power forward PJ Palacielo protected the NU lead with back-to-back buckets, 49-43.

With a slim lead in the last minutes, Reinhard Jumamoy stepped up for NU, calmly sinking six consecutive free throws and completely holding off the Green Archers’ late-game comeback attempt.

“We're starting a new season, a new generation for this team, so we’ll just keep learning and implementing our system,” said Head Coach Jeff Napa, who enters a new era without veteran cornerstones Jake Figueroa, Steve Nash Enriquez, and Jolo Manansala.

Reinhard Jumamoy exploded with 15 points, five rebounds, two assists, and one block while Mo Diassana delivered nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds. PJ Palacielo contributed eight points and six boards, while rookie DJ Laconsay had an eight-point production in his debut.

“Alam kong bata yung mga kasama ko. At lagi kong sinasabi sa sarili ko, at laging sinasabi ni Coach Jeff sa akin na, hindi na ako bata. Ako na yung isa sa leader dito,” Team Captain Jumamoy shared on the post-game press conference.

After an impressive start, the Gold-and-Blue squad aims to keep momentum as they face preseason defending champion UP on May 19 at the same venue.

Quarter scores: 14-15, 32-28, 49-44, 70-64
