• • • STAPLES. After seeing all her three daughters get pregnant on the same year, Nena started selling contraceptive products at her sari-sari store. She thought it important to provide community access to RH tools, especially after the LGU had cut their municipality's budget for free condoms and pills.

At HF, we think Reproductive Health is an important but often overlooked issue. We admit that it is a politically and ideologically sensitive topic, but a necessary conversation to be had - for it forms the starting point(s) of the economics of poverty, health, and community development.

• • • CLEAN WATER IN SCHOOLS. Millions of children in the developing world go to schools which have no drinking water or clean latrines – basic things that many of us take for granted.

Unsafe water, inadequate sanitation and lack of hygiene not only affect the health, safety, and quality of life of children. They also claim the lives of an estimated 1.5 million children under the age of five who die each year from diarrhea. Those who survive severe water born diseases end up with disabilities that can affect them for life.

• • • VULNERABLE LGUs. A multi-organization WASH program led by UNICEF focuses on the poorest villages with the lowest Water, Santitaion and Hygiene (WASH) coverage.

In 2014, the project achieved coverage in 20 highest-risk and vulnerable local government units (LGUs). Interventions were scaled up to 80 municipalities in 2016.

She takes care of her 4 young children, helps her husband tend to their crops, goes out fishing for food every weekend, and takes odd jobs to augment the family income. On top of that she sits for hours weaving coconut leaves to see their roofing maintained, and sells the spare for extra cash.

She is able to do all this because of a deeply held belief: that all her hardwork has paid off whenever she is able to put enough food on the table, provide medical care for her children, and send them to school.

To help instill some form of normalcy back into their lives, the Philippine Department of Education (DepEd) has mandated that schools in nearby safer cities accept Marawi students immediately. Maranao speaking teachers have also been called to serve in refugee centers.

While the government is doing what they can, the need remains significant. Schools and refugee centers lack student materials and teacher's kits.

Various local government units, and corporations, NGOs have joined in to help.

4 million, or over 53% of young people are in vulnerable employment with meager income and poor working conditions.

This is the current struggle of millions of young Vietnamese, despite having finished secondary or tertiary education. At the heart of this issue is the reality that graduates come out of school with mismatched skills to available employment.

"Rendering health care services for the people of Matanog became easier because of the access to clean and sufficient water through the help of USAID and Hyperion Fund. At most, access to water improves patients' odds for survival, and at the very least, minimizes the chances of infection. Since we have enough water supply, the Rural Health Unit is open 24/7 to address the needs of the patients, especially the mothers who will give birth via normal delivery." - Bulawan Dimacompas, RN, Public Health Nurse.

One of the targets of the DOH Millennium Development Goals is to significantly reduce maternal and infant mortality rates in the Philippines. The UN and the local government have stressed that potable water supply is an essential element in reaching this goal.

• • •ACCESS TO REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH EDUCATION. In the Philippines, less than 60% of women have access to reproductive healthcare or basic knowledge due to pervasive conservatism, preventing availability in schools and public facilities.

We use this opportunity to wrestle with our own assumptions, and take a first-hand look at a potential grantee's strategies and challenging environment.

Our travels for Hyperion Fund are often long, difficult, and frustrating. But these experiences have compelled us to find solutions beyond funding, and help (in our own way) bring worthy projects toward their goals. • • •
