**Meet Wynstelle ๐ถโจ**
Wynstelle is a graduate student in Music Therapy who believes deeply in the power of music as both a human-centered art and an evidence-based practice. Drawn to the field by her love for people and for music, she sees music therapy as a dynamic and intentional processโone that helps individuals move through hurt, stress, and defenses while nurturing their strengths within their cognitive and physical capacities.
For Wynstelle, effective music therapy goes beyond simply making music. It involves thoughtful planning, real-time responsiveness, and meeting each client exactly where they are. As she puts it,
โBecause the person is dynamic, the music and the therapistโs approach must be dynamic tooโthis is what makes each session potent in reaching both musical and non-musical goals.โ
Inspired by the diverse paths of therapists across cultures and specialties, Wynstelle values the idea that there is no single way to practice music therapy. Each practitioner brings their own expertise and style, yet all are guided by the same purpose: using music as a meaningful bridge toward healing, growth, and human connection. ๐ผ๐

Sharing the reflection of Gerome Liwanag's practicum at the Music Therapy Center.
Working with the client reminded me that music therapy is not about the instrument โ it is about the individual.
Assigned to a bright and emotionally expressive 7-year-old with ASD and a history of speech regression, I quickly learned that flexibility is essential. What works for one child may not work for another. While piano is often a central tool in our training, I discovered that certain sounds overwhelmed her. Instead of insisting, I adapted โ introducing guitar, xylophone, bells, bubbles, rhythm play, and vocal engagement.
Through careful observation and adjustment, I saw how different sounds created different responses. Over time, music became a bridge for connection rather than a trigger. In one meaningful moment, we worked on vocal imitation, and she was able to attempt the word โthreeโ โ a small word, but a powerful step in rebuilding expressive confidence.
With the client, I learned that progress begins with safety. Fun and curiosity must come first; learning follows naturally. Music therapy is not about forcing outcomes โ it is about meeting a child where they are and walking alongside them.
This experience deepened my understanding that every child with ASD has a unique sensory world. As therapists, our role is to listen โ not only to music, but to the child behind it.

HAPPENING NOW: The College of Music and the Performing Arts students, staff and administrators reflecting on the Way of the Cross. The Way of the Cross is a traditional devotion in honour of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus.
