The solemn event that is Ash Wednesday is a grim yet needed reminder of our mortality; we are and will be nothing but dust. It marks the start of the Lenten Period leading up to the resurrection of Jesus. On this day, Catholics honor the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The ashes obtained from the burnt palm are applied to the forehead or sprinkled at the top of the head. It is a reminder of the need for repentance and mourning for the sins we have committed throughout our lives. This continuing tradition is part of our devotion to our Almighty Lord, already engraved in our hearts and culture. Let us be reminded of the sacrifices made by Jesus to cleanse the sins we have committed, to keep our faith and humility, and remember who matters most: our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
