The rising cost of managing hypertension can threaten both health and household finances. ๐Œ๐š๐ซ๐ข๐š ๐„๐Ÿ๐ซ๐ž๐ฅ๐ข๐ฃ ๐‰. ๐‚๐ฎ๐š๐๐ซ๐š and ๐๐ฎ๐ž๐ž๐ง๐œ๐ฒ ๐. ๐†๐ž๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐š of the College of Arts and Sciences, Bukidnon State University (BukSU), examine how out-of-pocket hypertension care expenses may deepen financial vulnerability among households in Mindanao. Drawing from evidence on hypertension-related healthcare costs in Ghana, the thought paper highlights the Philippine context, particularly the challenges faced by families dependent on agriculture, informal work, and microenterprises. It also emphasizes culturally responsive healthcare that respects indigenous knowledge while promoting evidence-based hypertension management. Published in a Scopus- and Web of Science-indexed journal, the paper calls for stronger drug coverage, reliable access to essential medicines, culturally responsive primary care, community health education, and greater financial protection for vulnerable communities.

According to official communication released on September 21, 2026, PHREB granted BukSU REC provisional Level 2 status, effective through September 20, 2027.
