The Accrediting Agency of Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines (AACCUP) commenced its Online First Survey Accreditation Visit on July 27, 2026, for Bukidnon State University's (BukSU) Bachelor of Science in Biology, major in Biotechnology, and Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science, major in Environmental Heritage Studies.

One of the 10 survey areas evaluated was Extension and Community Involvement, which highlights BukSU's commitment to meaningful university-community partnerships and sustainable development.

The evaluation was led by Dr. Nelson J. Montialto, who validated the University's extension initiatives and their impact on the community. As part of the process, Barangay Chairman Billy M. Ricarte of Barangay Sumpong, a partner of Project SAWAGA, shared the project's outcomes and impact.

The validation was facilitated by Project SAWAGA Extension Leader Dr. Lesley Casas Lubos, together with Lead Extensionist Ms. Christine Mea A. Aser and Extensionist Dr. Ma. Thesageen P. Sarabia.

Chairman Ricarte highlighted that Project SAWAGA's training activities have improved solid waste segregation, recycling practices, and environmental awareness, contributing to the protection and preservation of the Sawaga River. He also expressed support for the continuation or renewal of the BukSU-community partnership and shared that he and the local legislative body are currently working on a barangay ordinance to further institutionalize environmental protection and proper solid waste management as an outcome of the project.

The validation also included a virtual tour of the Sawaga River, showcasing the project's initiatives and outcomes. Chairman Ricarte further committed to encouraging broader community participation, extending beyond households living along the river.

The College of Arts and Sciences, through the Natural Sciences Department, extends its sincere gratitude to the University Administration for its unwavering support of programs that advance scientific learning, environmental stewardship, sustainability, and innovation.

Special appreciation is extended to SMART BukSU President Dr. Joy M. Mirasol; Dr. Carina Joane V. Barroso, Vice President for Research, Extension, and Innovation (VPREI); Dr. Hazel Jean M. Abejuela, Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA); Mr. Dante S. Victoria Jr., Vice President for Administration and Finance (VPAF); Dr. Lincoln V. Tan, Vice President for Culture, Arts, Sports, and Student Services (VPCASSS); Dr. Maribel G. Valdez, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences; Dr. Marites M. Egar, Chair of the Natural Sciences Department; all College Deans; and the entire University Top Management for their collective support in strengthening extension, experiential learning, and biodiversity conservation initiatives.

The implementation of Project SAWAGA is supported by Bukidnon State University through the Extension Services and Community Engagement Unit (ESCEU), headed by ESCEU Director Dr. Jiemalyn B. Paulican.

Through strong university-community partnerships, sustained engagement, and local policy action, BukSU continues to transform knowledge into meaningful and lasting action for people and the environment.

Project S.P.R.O.U.T. Takes Root: BukSU Launches Research-Based Initiative for Conservation and Community Empowerment

MALAYBALAY CITY, BUKIDNON โ€“ June 25, 2026 โ€” Bukidnon State University (BukSU) officially launched Project S.P.R.O.U.T. (Sustainable Plant Reproduction Outreach), a research-based extension initiative aimed at advancing science-based plant propagation, nursery development, biodiversity conservation, and community empowerment. The project marks a significant step toward strengthening local capacities in environmental stewardship and sustainable livelihood development.

The initiative was spearheaded by the College of Arts and Sciences โ€“ Natural Sciences Department through the BS Biology Major in Biotechnology Program, in partnership with the College of Education โ€“ PhD in Science Education Major in Biology Program. The activity was conducted in collaboration with the BukSU Botanical Gardens and Herbarium Office, Barangay 1, and the Bukidnon Tagoloan Tribe Ancestral Domain.

Project S.P.R.O.U.T. brought together community members, educators, students, and local stakeholders in a shared commitment to conserving biodiversity, promoting sustainable resource management, and enhancing community resilience through science-based approaches.

The program featured lectures from experts in plant science, nursery management, and community development.
Dr. Lesley C. Lubos, Project Leader, delivered a lecture titled โ€œScience-Based Nursery Development: From Propagation to Plant Survival Monitoring.โ€ His presentation highlighted the importance of applying scientific methods in nursery establishment, plant propagation, and survival monitoring to improve the success of restoration, conservation, and greening initiatives.

Dr. Marites M. Egar, Lead Extensionist, presented โ€œImproving Nursery Operations and Community-Based Plant Maintenance,โ€ emphasizing best practices in nursery management and the critical role of local communities in ensuring the long-term survival and growth of planted seedlings.

Meanwhile, Mr. Jayson G. Balansag, Extensionist, discussed โ€œSustainable Livelihood through Plant-Based Enterprises,โ€ showcasing opportunities for generating income through environmentally responsible plant-based products and enterprises.
Project S.P.R.O.U.T. aims to equip participants with practical knowledge and skills in plant propagation, nursery establishment and management, plant survival monitoring, community-based maintenance, and the development of sustainable livelihood opportunities. By integrating research, education, and extension, the initiative seeks to transform scientific knowledge into meaningful community action while contributing to biodiversity conservation and environmental sustainability.

The Project S.P.R.O.U.T. team extends its sincere gratitude to the University Administration for its unwavering support in the successful implementation of this research-based extension initiative. In particular, the project expresses its profound appreciation to SMART BukSU President Dr. Joy M. Mirasol for her steadfast commitment to strengthening the University's extension programs and fostering meaningful partnerships that bring science and innovation closer to communities.

The project likewise acknowledges the invaluable support and encouragement of Dr. Carina Joane V. Barroso, Vice President for Research, Extension, and Innovations (VPREI); Dr. Hazel Jean M. Abejuela, Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA); Mr. Dante S. Victoria Jr., Vice President for Administration and Finance (VPAF); Dr. Lincoln V. Tan, Vice President for Campus Affairs, Student Services, and Sports (VPCASSS); Dr. Maribel G. Valdez, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences; Dr. Ann Shiela C. Del Rosario, Dean of the College of Education; and Dr. Jiemalyn B. Paulican, Director for Extension Services and Community Engagement Unit. The project team also extends its appreciation to all College Deans and the entire University Top Management for their collective efforts in advancing programs that promote scientific appreciation, experiential learning, environmental stewardship, and biodiversity conservation.

As Project S.P.R.O.U.T. takes root, Bukidnon State University continues to strengthen the connection between science and society. Through collaborative partnerships and evidence-based outreach programs, the University reaffirms its commitment to environmental conservation, community empowerment, and sustainable developmentโ€”one seedling at a time
