BOOKS AND BITES OUTREACH: GLORY Club Brings Stories, Smiles, and Service to Baybay Day Care Center

The English Department of Davao del Sur School of Fisheries (DSSF), together with its dynamic GLORY Club, successfully rolled out its community outreach initiative “Books and Bites” at Baybay Day Care Center, Baybay, Malalag, Davao del Sur on November 15, 2025.

Spearheaded by GLORY Club President Shaira Dianne Salvilla, the event came to life through the collective effort of the club officers, the supportive English Department teachers, and generous external partners who shared resources to make the activity meaningful and memorable.

Anchored on the advocacy of nurturing early literacy, the outreach aimed to cultivate children’s love for reading while also providing simple nourishment to promote holistic well-being. More than 30 young learners eagerly participated, accompanied by their parents who witnessed the fun and learning firsthand.

The program flourished with the solid support of school administrators, Mr. Jeuffrey Paler (School Principal IV), Mr. Michael Heramiz (SHS Principal I), and Mr. Dexter John Gomez (Head Teacher II) alongside the enthusiastic backing of Barangay Captain Ruben Selle and Day Care Teacher Ma’am Caputolan.

The day unfolded with a lively storytelling session, followed by guided reading activities, a feeding program, and a series of parlor games that filled the center with laughter and excitement. The children enjoyed not only the stories and treats but also the warmth of the volunteers who devoted their time and energy.

More than just an outreach, Books and Bites stood as a testament to the school’s commitment to literacy, community engagement, and compassionate service. It showcased what can be achieved when educators, students, and community leaders work hand in hand, a simple act of giving that leaves a lasting impact on young hearts and minds.

Voices in Motion: GLORY Club Charts Vision for Language-Driven Leadership

In a dynamic show of collaboration and planning, the GLORY Club—Growing and Learning through Opportunities, Resources, and Youthful Engagements in English of the English Department held a special meeting with its newly appointed officers on July 24, 2025, at the SBM Room of Davao del Sur School of Fisheries.

Composed of both Junior and Senior High School students, the new set of GLORY officers convened to set the tone for a productive and purpose-driven school year. The meeting was captained by the club’s committed advisers, Ma’am Kizza Telacas and Mr. Rhonex Paras, who guided the discussion with clarity and passion.

At the heart of the agenda was the presentation and deliberation of the General Plan of Action (GPOA) for School Year 2025–2026. The proposed initiatives were carefully mapped out to align with the curriculum while responding to the evolving needs of learners in today’s world.

Notably, the GPOA featured a diverse lineup of activities focused on developing students’ reading and speaking skills, strengthening 21st-century competencies, and enhancing critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication. The club also outlined plans for income-generating projects to promote self-sufficiency and sustain future initiatives.

In addition, the officers discussed upcoming community outreach efforts and affirmed their continued support for the Special Program in Foreign Language – Japanese (SPFL-Japanese), embracing linguistic inclusivity and cultural awareness as part of the club’s extended mission.

With a clear vision and an empowered student leadership team, the GLORY Club is ready to make impactful contributions to the school community. Through purposeful planning and language-driven engagement, this school year marks a renewed commitment to letting students’ voices lead the way - one word, one action at a time.

English Department Leads Reading Assessment to Address Literacy Gaps

Davao del Sur School of Fisheries has officially kicked off its reading assessment and advocacy campaign this June 2025, marking a bold step toward strengthening literacy among students.

Spearheaded by the School Reading Coordinators—Ma’am Airesh Jae Costanos for Junior High School and Ma’am Rhanielyn Medrina for Senior High School—together with the full support of the English teachers, the initiative began with the administration of a General Screening Test. This test served as a prerequisite for the implementation of the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI), which will be used to determine each student's current reading level. The Phil-IRI results will then serve as the foundation for further assessments and tailored literacy interventions.

The activity is aligned with the Department of Education’s national program Bawat Bata Bumabasa (3Bs Initiative), which underscores the department’s commitment to eliminating illiteracy across basic education institutions.

The outcomes of these assessments will guide the English Department in shaping future programs and strategies, especially in developing innovative and responsive reading initiatives. By identifying specific reading gaps and providing data-driven solutions, the school aims to create a learning environment where all students are empowered to become confident and capable readers.

Beyond the numbers and assessments, the campaign reflects a greater vision: to foster a culture of reading, ignite curiosity, and support every learner’s journey toward academic growth. With strong collaboration among reading coordinators, teachers, and learners, the school reaffirms its commitment to making every reader count.

Davao del Sur School of Fisheries’ Mr. Ronel Cornella Shines in National Japanese Language Teaching Program

Makati City, Philippines — Demonstrating excellence in language education, Mr. Ronel Cornella, a committed educator from the Davao del Sur School of Fisheries (DSSF), made his mark in the national arena after successfully completing the Intensive SPFL–Japanese Teaching Course organized by the Japan Foundation, Manila, in cooperation with the Department of Education, Bureau of Curriculum Development.

The intensive training was conducted in two phases: online via Zoom from May 19 to 30, 2025, followed by face-to-face sessions from June 2 to 6, 2025, at St. Giles Hotel, Makati City. Spanning a total of 120 hours, the program was designed to equip public high school teachers with the skills and cultural knowledge necessary to teach Japanese under the Special Program in Foreign Language (SPFL).

Mr. Cornella not only completed the training with distinction but also earned multiple recognitions:

A Certificate of Achievement for being an Exemplary Trainee, awarded for his outstanding attendance, active participation, top performance in assessments, timely submission of assignments, effective classroom demonstrations, and high professionalism throughout the course.

A Certificate of Recognition for serving as a Demonstration Teacher, sharing his expertise and instructional methods during the face-to-face sessions.

A Certificate of Completion confirming his successful fulfillment of the entire program's requirements.

With these credentials, Mr. Cornella is now fully equipped and ready to teach “Nihongo” or Japanese at Davao del Sur School of Fisheries, which proudly holds the distinction of being the only school in the entire Davao del Sur Division offering the SPFL–Japanese program.

This achievement marks a significant milestone not only for Mr. Cornella but also for DSSF, as it strengthens the school’s position as a center for foreign language education in the region. It highlights the increasing capability of Filipino educators to deliver globally relevant instruction and reinforces the Department of Education’s goal of producing learners who are culturally aware and linguistically equipped for international engagement.
