Some beginnings are easy to overlook because we only see what they have become. But before The College of Maasin became the place we know today, there was Maasin Institute, and there was your decision to begin. More than a hundred years later, that beginning can still be found in the students filling the classrooms, the teachers giving their time, and the many lives that have passed through these halls. What you started did not remain in your time; it found its way into ours, carried by generation after generation who learned, taught, served, and eventually passed something of it on to someone else.
Perhaps that is one of the quiet wonders of the legacy you left behind. A lesson taught here does not always end when the class does. It follows a student home, into another classroom, another profession, another community, sometimes becoming a lesson for someone else along the way. Your vision has continued in those small and often unseen momentsโin people choosing to teach, to serve, to believe, and to keep learning even when the road becomes difficult. The school has grown and changed with the years, but the heart of that first beginning continues to find new places to grow.
Today, as we mark your birthday, the Liberal Arts and Education Department joins the many generations who have been shaped by what you started in remembering the life and vision behind this institution. You may no longer walk through these halls, but something of you remains in the people who continue to learn and serve within them.
From Maasin Institute to The College of Maasin, your beginning has traveled farther than you could have seen, and it continues to unfold in every student who learns, every teacher who teaches, and every life touched by this place. Today, we remember not only the founder who began it, but the legacy that continues to speak through all those who came after.
