Hugs of Hope Brings Christmas Cheer to Typhoon-Affected Children in Catmon, St. Bernard
In a spirit of compassion and solidarity, the Social Work Department of Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) – Maasin City Campus successfully conducted the “Hugs of Hope: A Christmas Outreach Activity for the Children in Catmon” on December 17, 2025. The event was held in Catmon, Southern Leyte, one of the areas most severely affected by Typhoon Tino.
Catmon sustained extensive damage from the typhoon, with many establishments, particularly schools, either partially or completely destroyed. Recognizing the urgent need for psychosocial support and educational assistance, this outreach activity aimed to bring hope, joy, and a sense of normalcy to children and educators during the holiday season.
This initiative was made possible through the combined efforts of the Social Work Department and the generosity of SLSU students, faculty and staff, and external donors, who provided support through various donations. The event was attended by teachers from Catmon Integrated School, children from Kindergarten to Grade 6, and their parents, fostering a strong sense of community participation and shared healing.
Throughout the event, children engaged in fun and interactive games designed to promote laughter and emotional well-being. A communal meal was shared, creating a warm and inclusive environment for families and volunteers to connect. The children also received school supplies, while teachers were provided with essential stationery materials to support the continuity of learning despite the challenges following the disaster.
More than just a gift-giving event, Hugs of Hope served as a meaningful reminder that even in the aftermath of calamity, collective action and compassion can restore hope and resilience. This initiative underscored SLSU’s commitment to community engagement, social responsibility, and the promotion of child welfare, especially during times of crisis.
As Catmon continues its journey toward recovery, this outreach activity stands as a testament to the power of partnership, empathy, and service in rebuilding not only structures but also spirits.

YOUR KINDNESS IS ALREADY MAKING AN IMPACT!
We have raised Php. 11, 500.00 and Php. 6,000.00 worth of school supplies!
But with 260 students to support, the need continues. If you'd like to help, we are still open for donations. Even smallest amount can put school tools in a child's hands. Together, we can make their school year brighter.

We humbly call for your support in helping the children of Brgy. Catmon, St. Bernard, Southern Leyte, who continue to face challenges in pursuing their education following the devastation brought by Typhoon Tino. Many students are still without essential school supplies and learning materials, making it difficult for them to return to their normal learning routines. We are appealing to the generosity of individuals and organizations who may be willing to donate school supplies to aid these young learners in rebuilding their hopes and strengthening their path toward a brighter future. Any contribution, big or small, will make a meaningful difference.

Happy World Kindness Day!
As our communities cope with the impact of Typhoon Tino and Super Typhoon Uwan, let this image be a powerful reminder: Our Filipino spirit and our willingness to help each other is stronger than any storm.
Right now, kindness is checking on a flooded neighbor, sharing a meal, or volunteering at an evacuation center. It costs nothing to be this kind of light in the darkness.
But our commitment doesn't end when the sun returns. Let’s practice this same compassion, patience, and generosity—the gentle smile, the listening ear, the Kumusta ka?—every single day, even when the skies are clear.
Kindness is not just a response to a crisis; it is the constant foundation of a resilient nation.
Be kind to everyone, always. Stay safe, Pilipinas! 🙏
