As our campaign draws to a close, we would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for the support you have given to Watch Your Language.

Gender inequality and sexism manifest not only through unequal gender representation or stereotyping but also through the language we use daily. We hope that through WYL, we have succeeded in instilling in you a heightened awareness that will encourage greater mindfulness and sensitivity in your speech. Let us remember that our words not only reflect but also shape our culture, values, and norms. Therefore, it is through our words that we can redefine our perception of these fundamental societal aspects.

Gender Equality is not only manifested through equal rights and opportunities for women and men. It is also seen in our words which we use as tools to ensure that everyone is recognized, regardless of their gender identity, with equal value and respect (European Institute for Gender Equality, 2016).

WYL! WYL? Watch Your Language! ๐Ÿ—ฃ

โ€œWatch Your Languageโ€ is a campaign that seeks to educate the public on how Gender-Fair and Inclusive Language (โ€œGFILโ€) can be used as a tool to challenge and eradicate all forms of derogatory remarks, particularly Filipino women.

The campaign name draws inspiration from Gen Zโ€™s acronym slang or lingo, such as LMK, IYKYK, and NGL. โ€œWYLโ€ is a new acronym intended to attract the public, particularly the young audience.

Why do you have to WYL? ๐Ÿคจ๐Ÿง

Women continue to face misogynist and sexist discourses in the global realm (Amnesty International, 2020). The discriminatory discourses against women stem largely from traditional gender norms embedded in patriarchal society. These norms often portray women as inferior to men, leading to misogynist and sexist discourses in the workplace, schools, and public spaces.

Gendered language reinforces gender bias and discrimination. It poses a major threat to the overall well-being of women, as it limits their opportunities and silences their voices in the public.
