Butterflies worldwide are on the move as the climate warms. A new global study shows the scale of the range shift is far greater and more complex than previously understood.

Asst. Prof. Jade A.T. Badon coauthors this study, the largest of its kind, which analysed 6,182 range‑shift records for 1,758 species across 105 countries, drawing on English and non‑English scientific literature as well as 68 expert assessments.

Insects are increasingly pressured by climate change. Here the authors compile global evidence of range shifts in butterflies and call for more co-ordinated efforts in documenting such trends across countries.

Can the "Makahiya" Plant (𝘔𝘪𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘢 𝘱𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘢 L.) help relieve period cramps?

For today's , we’re featuring a study by UPLB researchers that explored whether a tea or extract made from the leaves of the Makahiya plant (𝘔𝘪𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘢 𝘱𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘢 L.) has the potential to be a natural pain reliever for menstrual cramps (primary dysmenorrhea).

Dr. Maria Dalisay G. Maligalig and Paula Bianca D. De Guzman tested the extract on mice to see if it could reduce pain-related movements and inflammation, aiming to find a scientific basis for its traditional use as an alternative to standard painkillers like mefenamic acid.

While the current doses did not produce statistically significant results in pain reduction, the 𝘔. 𝘱𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘢 leaf decoction shows potential analgesic activity through its ability to manage inflammation and edema. The researchers recommend testing higher concentrations in future studies to potentially produce a stronger, statistically significant analgesic effect.
