Did you know that you can genetically modify an organism to improve its growth rate?🧬

The global demand for seafood has been increasing and is expected to continue to grow. To meet this accelerating demand a genetically modified salmon, known as AquAdvantage salmon, was developed. This was known to grow nearly twice as fast as its wild counterparts, reaching market size in about 18 months compared to the usual 36 months.

This advancement offers a sustainable solution to satisfy the growing demand of seafood while reducing pressure on wild fish populations.

Did you know that bacteria can be used to produce pharmaceutical products?🦠💊💉

The use of genetically modified plants or animals in producing pharmaceutical substances, also known as Biopharming, can also be applied to microorganisms. One well-known example is the use of genetically modified Escherichia coli in the production of insulin.

Biopharming holds a significant societal value, as it enables large-scale, cost effective production of essential medicines which improves the worldwide accessibility of public health.

🎥 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗧𝗼𝗸 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰: Official Video Submission from University of the Philippines - Visayas

From learning its intricacies in the four corners of the university to incorporating its concepts in producing innovative products and technologies, biotechnology has demonstrated its immense potential to shape our society. By blending academic knowledge with real-world applications, this field has paved the way for revolutionary products and technologies.

Through this Challenge, we proudly present some of the research undertakings of the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences of the University of the Philippines Visayas that harnesses the power of biotechnology in addressing issues confronting the fisheries sector, such as coming up with better and improved strains for aquaculture, and the erratic natural food supply for economically-important cultured aquatic species in the Philippines.

The 𝗨𝗣𝗩-𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲-𝗧𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗣𝗼𝗽𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗡𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮, more commonly known as 𝗨𝗣𝗩-𝗦𝗣𝗜𝗡 𝗧𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗮, and the innovative, cost-effective feed for aquaculture called 𝗝𝘂𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗹𝗴𝗮𝗲 are just two examples of the many products of biotechnological application in fisheries science. These innovations demonstrate the potential to address challenges in the fisheries sector through education, product and technology innovation, and commercialization of effective solutions.

In biotechnology, a brighter future awaits!

BioTechTok 2024 is the official video competition of the National Intercollegiate Genetics Quiz Contest 2024, with the theme “REVVING UP: Genetics as the Fuel for Advancing Food and Health Biotechnology Frontiers”. In line with the celebration of National Biotechnology Week 2024, we commend these young scientists from our participating schools for spreading awareness of the wonders of biotechnology in the country! ⚡

Come and support your favorite BioTechTok entries by reacting to their corresponding posts, and they may just be one step closer to the Php 15,000 Grand Prize for our NIGQC 2024 Champion! 🏆

• Reactions, regardless of type (e.g., likes, hearts), will be counted until November 27, 2024 (Wednesday), 11:59 PM.
• An engagement score based on the number of reactions will be computed by dividing the participant’s total number by the highest total number of reactions among all the participants. The result will then be converted into percentage by multiplying by 100.
• The engagement score will serve as 40% of the final score for BioTechTok 2024, which will count towards 15% of the institution’s overall score for NIGQC 2024.
• The winner will be announced at the awarding ceremonies on November 29, 2024 (Friday).

Best of luck to our participants! Together, let us take part and in this year’s National Biotechnology Week! 🌱✨
