The Sacred Heart Academy Alumni Basketball Cup (SHAABaC) Executive Committee respectfully acknowledges receipt of the formal written protest and sincerely thanks them for taking the time to communicate their concern. The Committee likewise extends its heartfelt appreciation to the Class of 2018 for their active participation, exemplary sportsmanship, and continued support of both the school and the league. Their involvement has greatly contributed to sustaining a competitive and respectful tournament environment.
After a careful and comprehensive review of the tie in the overall standings between the Class of 2015 and the Class of 2018, the Committee wishes to provide clarification and resolution.
The tournament guidelines provide that international rules for amateur basketball shall govern the conduct of the games, while local rules may be adopted when necessary. In this instance, the local provision stating that ties shall be resolved through a โpoint systemโ was found to be insufficiently defined, as it did not clearly specify the method to be applied. The term may reasonably refer to several recognized tie-breaking standards, including head-to-head results, total points scored, or point differential.
While it was informally mentioned during the pre-tournament briefing that total points scored would be considered, this was not expressly and clearly reflected in the finalized written rules distributed to all participating teams. The Committee acknowledges this oversight and recognizes that the resulting ambiguity reasonably gave rise to the protest filed by the Class of 2018.
In the interest of fairness and competitive integrity, and to ensure that neither team is disadvantaged by an unclear provision, the Committee has determined that the most equitable course of action is to allow the outcome to be decided on the court. Accordingly, the Class of 2015 and the Class of 2018 shall compete in a do-or-die playoff game, with the winner officially securing the fourth spot in Bracket A and advancing to the Final Four for the said bracket. This resolution affords both teams an equal opportunity while preserving the spirit of fair competition.
The Committee sincerely regrets any confusion caused by the unclear wording of the rule and assures all parties that this matter was addressed with utmost diligence, impartiality, and transparency. Moving forward, the Committee remains committed to refining the tournament guidelines to provide greater clarity and to prevent similar concerns in future competitions.
The Committee commends the Class of 2018 once again for their professionalism and for the respectful manner in which their protest was conveyed.
The Committee values the cooperation of all teams and anticipates their ongoing involvement in future seasons.
