Together, we can make a difference. Every small actionโreducing waste, conserving energy, planting trees, and cleaning our oceansโbrings us closer to a goal that truly matters, a future where Earth can be enjoyed by generations to follow. One dirty hand can make a difference, but a community of people willing to dirty their hands to protect the only home we have can change the world. We have the power, and with it is a responsibility to act and take a stand for a clean and sustainable future.
The province of Sorsogon, with its renowned beaches, mountains, and countless natural wonders, is a home worth protecting. We, the BU SOSOG, continue to commit ourselves to serving the Sorsoganon community by taking a stand and realizing our power in protecting our home.

๐ฆ๐๐ฅ๐ฆ๐๐ก๐ข #๐ฐ | ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ฅ๐ข๐๐ฅ๐๐๐จ๐๐ญ : The Queen of Villains ๐ฌ
Did you know that one of the most legendary 'villains' in Philippine cinema history hails from the coastal town of Bulan, Sorsogon? Born Cecilia Rodriguez, this iconic actress often reflects on her roots as the foundation of her 'perfect childhood.' Growing up in a large family of eight daughters, she was raised on a vast hacienda where her early years were shaped by the raw beauty and quiet discipline of our province. This grounded, provincial upbringing gave her the fierce sense of identity and sophistication she would later bring to the silver screen.
Celia Rodriguez has made an extraordinary contribution to Philippine arts, becoming the gold standard for "Kontrabida" roles with her unmatched elegance and sharp wit. Her portrayal of the glamorous yet lethal Valentina in the 1971 Darna film remains one of the most iconic performances in pop culture history, proving that she could often steal the spotlight from the lead protagonists. Beyond her fame as a villain, her excellence has been recognized with multiple prestigious awards, including FAMAS and Gawad Urian trophies. As a proud daughter of Sorsogon, Celia Rodriguez serves as a powerful inspiration, showing that the character built in the heart of Sorsogon can conquer the national stage and leave an everlasting mark on the world of performance.

Did you know that the shores of Magallanes, Sorsogon once echoed with the sounds of the grandest shipbuilding in the world? During the 17th and 18th centuries, Bagatao Island was home to a Royal Astillero (Royal Shipyard), a high-tech hub of its time. This location was chosen for its strategic position at the mouth of Sorsogon Bay and its once-vast forests of premium hardwoods like Narra, Molave, and the now-extinct Parina. Our ancestors, known for their unrivalled skills in craftsmanship, were the primary hands that built these massive vessels. Among the most famous was the Santisima Trinidad y Seรฑora del Buen Fin, nicknamed "El Poderoso" (The Mighty). Launched in 1751, it was the largest and swiftest galleon of its era, a true "mountain in the water" with sides so thick that enemy cannonballs famously bounced off without leaving a dent!
While these "Floating Castles" brought global fame to the region, they also tell a profound story of Sorsoganon resilience. Building just one of these titans was a monumental task, requiring the harvest of roughly 2,000 trees and the tireless labor of thousands of local men. Despite the immense hardships and the eventual disappearance of the ancient Parina forests, the legacy of Bagatao stands as a testament to the incredible strength and technical skill of our forefathers. Today, SARSI invites you to look at the horizon of Magallanes and remember that our very own waters once launched the most formidable ships to ever navigate the Manila-Acapulco route, proving that Sorsoganon excellence has always been world-class.

Did you know that one of the most powerful figures in the history of Philippine journalism hails from our very own province? Born in Sorsogon City in 1925, Eugenia "Eggie" Apostol became a titan of the press during some of the countryโs most turbulent years. While she began her career in womenโs magazines, her true legacy was forged in the fire of the "Mosquito Press", the small but brave publications that challenged the status quo during the Martial Law era. Apostolโs Sorsoganon roots provided a foundation for her unwavering courage and sharp intellect, traits that eventually led her to found the Philippine Daily Inquirer in 1985. What started as a small weekly tabloid quickly became a national powerhouse, providing a critical platform for the truth during the People Power Revolution and forever changing the landscape of Philippine media.
Beyond her role as a founder of one of the countryโs leading newspapers, Apostolโs contributions as a woman in leadership are nothing short of revolutionary. She proved that a womanโs perspective in the newsroom could be both compassionate and incredibly formidable, earning her the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award for Journalism, Literature, and Creative Communication Arts in 2006. Even after retiring, her passion for justice didn't fade; she launched Pinoy Times to continue investigating government corruption, showing a lifelong commitment to the Filipino people. For the members of our province, Eugenia Apostol stands as a symbol of provincial pride, a reminder that a voice from Sorsogon can reach the highest levels of national influence and serve as a fearless guardian of democracy.

Imagine waking up to an earthquake, and then the ground literally does not stop shaking for over a month. In early 1840, the province of Sorsogon experienced a truly gag-worthy seismic nightmare: a relentless swarm of tremors that lasted for 35 continuous days. The absolute climax of this geological meltdown hit on the morning of March 21 (with some historical hazard records noting March 22), when a devastating magnitude 6.5 tectonic earthquake tore through the region. The sheer violence of this peak tremor didn't just flatten stone houses and colonial structures across Sorsogon and Casiguran; it physically altered the local geography. According to historical hazard data, the intense shaking caused the entire shoreline of Sorsogon Bay to undergo severe subsidence, sinking a massive five feet below its former level and causing the ocean to swallow the immediate coastal neighborhoods.
The cultural and architectural casualties of this 35-day seismic activity were absolutely staggering, but the disaster also forced a major architectural glow-up rooted in sheer survival. The original heavy stone church of Sorsogon was completely leveled during a Sunday high mass, tragically collapsing and burying parishioners alive in the rubble. The trauma and paranoia from the unending aftershocks were so severe that the municipal leaders and surviving citizens explicitly petitioned the provincial governor for permission to rebuild their town and church using only light, flexible indigenous materials like wood and nipa. They refused to build with heavy masonry again because the earth simply wouldn't stop moving, a decision that fundamentally shifted how colonial infrastructure was approached in this highly active fault zone.

National Artist Catalino "Lino" Ortiz Brocka was born in the municipality of Pilar on April 3, 1939. His early experiences reflected the dramatic storylines of his later works. At the age of fifteen, Lino's mother fell in love with his father, Regino, a talented Sorsoganon boat builder and carpenter. The couple left to establish a life together on a remote island off the coast of Bicol after facing strong opposition from her family. Although the family ultimately relocated to Nueva Ecija following his father's death amid a perceived political vendetta, Brocka's formative years and earliest recollections were firmly anchored in Sorsogon's vibrant culture and coastal scenery.
Brocka's artistic and political roots were established during those early years in the province, long before he became a well-known filmmaker and dedicated anti-establishment campaigner. The young Lino was individually taught debate, poetry, singing, and dance by his father, a prominent member of their island community. These artistic abilities would eventually define his powerful presence in Philippine cinema. In addition, Brocka was a wonderful example of the ferocious Bicolano uragon spirit, a brave and uncompromising defiance that drove his socially charged works such as Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag and, in the end, his unwavering real-life opposition to censorship and the Marcos dictatorship.
