‘Whatever gains I had, these I have come to regard as loss because of Christ.’ (Phil 3:7)

“This Word of Life speaks to us of the need for personal conversion and a profound change of mentality. It speaks to us of humility, simplicity and detachment from ourselves, above all, of doing good and giving witness to our faith. It speaks to us of abandoning habits, we hang on to and restore to our Christian life new energy and thrust so that the beauty of the Gospel can shine forth. It urges us to underscore what is essential and more universal in Jesus’ message, that is, listening to his Word and serving our neighbours.”

Peace starts within our hearts

“Just as every pruning produces new life in a plant, every time Christians give up something out of the love for Christ, they experience a burst of happiness. Let us make the decision to do away with everything that should not be in our hearts. If we do so, heaven will be ours in a few years and already now we will experience a deep sense of peace.”

Perseverance bears fruit

“Perseverance is necessary and indispensable when we suffer or are tempted, (…) If we want to follow Christ; we have to take up our cross every day. We have to embrace suffering, at least with our will. The Christian vocation is a vocation to endurance. Saint Paul the Apostle tells the community that his patient endurance is a sign that he is an authentic Christian. Moreover, he is not afraid to put perseverance on the same level as miracles. Thus, if someone loves the cross and patiently endures, they will be able to follow Christ who is in heaven and therefore be saved.”

Share the gifts we have received

“God does not pour out his gifts or direct his call to particular persons or groups, as if they had special rights or merits. Even less does he intend his gifts to become the privileged possession of one particular group or nation. Be the first to love

“Let us try to be the first to love each person we meet, or write to, or speak to on the phone, or with whom we live. Welcoming the pain of others

“Often when we are with another person, especially someone who is suffering, we imagine we are rendering a great service by giving our advice, which may not be appropriate at that moment, or by talking too much, which might become irritating burdensome for the other person. Instead, how important it is just to ‘be’ a presence of love for each person! When we do that, we often find the most direct way for entering into their heart and even relieving them of their pain.”

We are asked to do more, to do good to those who hurt us, as the apostles remind us: ‘Do not repay evil for evil, or abuse for abuse; but, on the contrary, repay with a blessing.
