🍌 Empowering Farmers Through Science and Technology for Sustainable Livelihoods

The implementation of the DOST-PCAARRD-funded Science and Technology Community-Based Project on ‘Lakatan’ Banana Production in Abra by the Abra State Institute of Sciences and Technology – Agriculture, Food and Technology Innovation Incubation and Commercialization Center (ASIST-AFTIICC) is steadily progressing with the distribution of high-quality tissue-cultured Lakatan banana seedlings to qualified farmer-beneficiaries.

One of the project beneficiaries has committed a portion of his farmland for conversion into a Lakatan banana plantation, demonstrating strong support for technology-driven agricultural development and sustainable farming.

Beyond the provision of planting materials, ASIST-AFTIICC, under the leadership of Dr. Nero M. Paderes and support of the OIC President Dr. Serafin Ngohayon and VPAA Dr. Noel Begnalen will continue to provide comprehensive technical assistance, capacity-building activities, and regular field monitoring throughout the production cycle—from plantation establishment and crop management to harvesting and marketing. This ensures the successful adoption of the technology, long-term sustainability of the enterprise, and increased income opportunities for farmer-beneficiaries.

Through the partnership of Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development and Abra State Institute of Sciences and Technology, the project aims to strengthen local banana production, improve rural livelihoods, and contribute to agricultural productivity and food security in the Province of Abra.

Science and technology continue to create opportunities for Abra farmers—transforming farmlands into sustainable sources of income and growth. 🌱🍌🇵🇭

🍄 Advancing Wild Edible Mushroom Research for Food Sustainability in Abra 🍄

Pushing beyond the conventional boundaries of laboratory-based tissue culture and scientific research, the ASIST Wild Edible Mushroom Resources Research and Innovation Center successfully conducted onsite tissue culture and propagation of wild edible mushrooms collected from the forests of Malibcong.

This initiative, made possible through the invaluable cooperation and support of the Local Government Unit of Malibcong, aims to conserve, propagate, and domesticate indigenous wild edible mushroom species under controlled and safe conditions. By transforming locally available fungal resources into sustainable food and livelihood opportunities, the project contributes to strengthening food security and biodiversity conservation in the Province of Abra.

The Center likewise envisions the establishment of permanent research stations in Malibcong to facilitate long-term ecological monitoring, advanced scientific investigations, species conservation, and the development of cultivation technologies for wild edible mushrooms.

Through science, innovation, and community partnership, ASIST continues to champion sustainable solutions that harness the rich biological resources of Abra for the benefit of present and future generations.

📢 Tissue Culture Laboratory Successfully Upgraded through DA-ACEF Support

Abra State Institute of Sciences and Technology (ASIST), through the Agriculture, Food and Technology Innovation Incubation and Commercialization Center (AFTIICC), proudly announces the successful delivery, inspection, testing, and acceptance of specialized equipment for the rehabilitation and upgrading of its Tissue Culture Laboratory under the Department of Agriculture – Agricultural Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (DA-ACEF) project.

The newly acquired laboratory equipment, includes an digital autoclave, vertical laminar flow cabinet, water distiller, analytical balances, microscope with laptop connectivity, tissue culture shelves, sterilizers, micropipettes, and other essential laboratory instruments.

All equipment were verified to meet the required technical specifications and were found to be fully operational and in excellent working condition. This milestone strengthens ASIST's capability in plant tissue culture research, quality seedling production, agricultural innovation, and technology development in support of farmers and stakeholders in the region.

This initiative reflects ASIST's commitment to advancing science, technology, and innovation for sustainable agricultural development.
