FEATURE | Guevara High School: A Legacy of Learning, Built through Dedication

In the heart of La Paz, Tarlac, stands Guevara High School; a testament to community spirit and a beacon of education for the youth of more or less eight barangays. More than just a building, it is a living legacy; forged from the collaborative efforts of dedicated individuals who envisioned a brighter future for the next generation.

The seeds of Guevara High School were sown through the collaborative efforts of the founder, Mr. Francisco Balmores, alongside Barangay Captain Mariano Paladan, Pelagia Taliwaga, Lucio Aningat, Marieta Cruzcosa, Patricio Feliciano, Alfredo De Guzman, and Conrado De Guzman. Their vision, was established when Republic Act No. 6054, known as "Charity for Barrio School", was signed into law.

This pivotal legislation empowered the parents, led by Brgy. Captain Paladan, to pass a resolution and petition the Schools Division Superintendent, Mr. Alberto Talens. This collective resolve led to the establishment of Guevara Experimental High School on February 6, 1966, initially operating as a satellite school of Victoria High School. The early days was held in two borrowed classrooms from Guevara Elementary School, catering to an initial set of 40 students.

As the years passed, the consistent increase in student enrollment presented both a challenge and an opportunity. The need for more classrooms became pressing, and a letter from then-Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Guerardo Erquiza to the newly elected PTA President, Mr. Romy Batad, proved to be the turning point. Guevara High School was selected as a recipient of classrooms through the SEDP program, with the condition that construction would take place on school-owned land with an attached deed of donation. This hurdle was swiftly overcome through the unwavering support of Vice Governor R. Llamas, the Sangguniang Bayan, Sangguniang Barangay, PTA Officials, Engr. Alexander Montemayor, and Sangguniang Panlalawigan Venustiano Martinez. This collaborative effort resulted in the addition of the FVR Building in 1994, followed by the JICA Building from Japan in 2004, and more structures built under subsequent principals.

The journey of Guevara High School is also a story of its pioneering educators. Visionary teachers like Mr. Leodegario Vasquez, Mr. Esteban Corcuera, Mr. Roberto Mohamed, Mr. Epimaco Constantino, Ms. Gloria Macadangdang, Rizalinda Macadangdang, Maxima Derije, and Mr. David Bautista laid the groundwork for academic excellence.

Moreover, leadership played a crucial role in the school's growth. In 1968, Mr. Arsenio Mamaradlo was assigned as the Head Teacher by Mr. Marcial Cabigting, the principal of Victoria High School. Mr. Mamaradlo dedicated himself to the school, serving as its head until 1994, when he was succeeded by Mrs. Gertrudes Bognot. Subsequent principals, including Mr. Ernesto Cunanan (1998-2004), Mrs. Concepcion Almazan, Mr. Mario Tayag, and Mrs. Ledesma Gabriel, continued to steer the institution toward progress.

The school's identity evolved over time, reflecting its growing stature. In 1976, Guevara Experimental High School was officially renamed Guevara Barangay High School. A decade later, in 1986, it achieved the significant milestone of becoming Guevara Nationalized High School, a testament to the persistent efforts of former PTA Presidents Mr. Francisco Balmores together with Mr. Bernabe Taliwaga, and Brgy. Captain Marieta Cruzcosa.

Today, Guevara High School stands as an autonomous institution, a vibrant educational hub with over 80 dedicated personnel and a student body exceeding 1,500, encompassing both Junior and Senior High School departments. Its vision is clearโ€”to transform the school into a place of leisure where learning flourishes, and the development of learners is a shared responsibility among students, teachers, parents, and the community as a whole. This vision is supported by a mission to provide a friendly and suitable learning environment through collaboration in all school programs and development endeavors.

Guevara High School's story is a powerful reminder of how community, dedication, and a shared belief in the power of education can create an enduring legacy for generations to come.

Andrรฉs Bonifacio y de Castro (November 30, 1863 โ€“ May 10, 1897) stands as a towering figure in Philippine history, revered as the father of the Philippine Revolution and founder of the Katipunan, the secret society that spearheaded the armed uprising against Spanish colonial rule. His legacy, marked by fervent nationalism and tragic martyrdom, continues to spark debates about leadership, justice, and national identity .

Born in Tondo, Manila, Bonifacio grew up in poverty, losing his parents early and supporting his siblings through odd jobs like crafting canes and posters. Despite limited formal education, he became a voracious reader, drawing inspiration from Victor Hugoโ€™s Les Misรฉrables and Josรฉ Rizalโ€™s novels, which stoked his anti-colonial fervor .

In 1892, disillusioned by Spainโ€™s oppressive rule, he co-founded the Katipunan (Kataas-taasang, Kagalang-galangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan), a radical movement advocating armed rebellion. Unlike Rizalโ€™s reformist La Liga Filipina, the Katipunan mobilized peasants and workers, swelling to 100,000 members by 1896 .

Bonifacioโ€™s leadership transformed the Katipunan into a parallel government. As its Supremo (Supreme Leader), he authored revolutionary manifestos and rallied Filipinos under the banner of Haring Bayang Katagalugan (Sovereign Tagalog Nation), a proto-republic. The August 1896 Cry of Pugad Lawinโ€”where Katipuneros tore their cedulas (tax certificates)โ€”marked the revolutionโ€™s explosive start .

However, early battles against Spanish forces faltered, exposing Bonifacioโ€™s tactical limitations. His rivalry with Emilio Aguinaldo, a Cavite-based general, intensified as Aguinaldoโ€™s victories eclipsed Bonifacioโ€™s influence .

In March 1897, the Tejeros Convention saw Aguinaldo elected president of a revolutionary government, while Bonifacio was sidelined as Director of the Interior. Refusing to recognize the results, Bonifacio declared the election void, leading Aguinaldoโ€™s faction to arrest him for โ€œtreasonโ€ .

On May 10, 1897, Bonifacio and his brother Procopio were executed in Maragondon, Cavite, under disputed circumstances. Historians argue the trial was rigged, with charges of sedition masking political vendetta .

Bonifacioโ€™s death remains a contentious chapter. While Aguinaldo became the first Philippine president, Bonifacio is celebrated as the revolutionโ€™s soulโ€”a self-taught visionary who empowered the masses. Yet, his bones are still missing, and calls persist for his symbolic reburial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani (Heroesโ€™ Cemetery) .

His life underscores themes of class struggle and revolutionary idealism, immortalized in monuments, literature, and annual commemorations like Bonifacio Day (November 30). Though overshadowed in official histories, Bonifacioโ€™s defiance against tyranny resonates as a timeless call for justice and sovereignty. Adapted

In the pages of Philippine history, few figures loom as large or as luminously as Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr.. Born on November 27, 1932, in Tarlac, Aquino was a political prodigy whose charisma and intellect propelled him to national prominence at a young age. By 34, he was the youngest senator in Philippine history, known for his sharp eloquence, sharp and wit, and unyielding criticism of corruption and authoritarianism.

But it was during the Martial Law era under President Ferdinand E. Marcos (1972-1981) that Aquino's role transformed from rising star to resolute dissident. As Marcos tightened his grip on power, Aquino became the regime's most vocal opponent. His arrest and subsequent seven-year imprisonment were emblematic intolerance for dissent.

In 1980, Aquino was allowed to leave for the United States to undergo heart surgery. Despite warnings of danger, he returned to the Philippines on August 21, 1983, determined to challenge the dictatorship. Moments after landing at then, Manila International Airport, he was assassinated, brutal act that shocked the nation and the world.

His death was not in vain. It galvanized a grieving and outraged public, sparking mass protests and civil disobedience. The momentum culminated in the 1986 People Power Revolution, which peacefully ousted Marcos and ushered in a new democratic era. Aquino's widow, Corazon C. Aquino, emerged as unifying figure and became the country's first female president.

Aquino's life and death are etched into the Filipino consciousness as symbols of sacrifice, patriotism, and the enduring fight for democracy. His famous words, "๐“ฃ๐“ฑ๐“ฎ ๐“•๐“ฒ๐“ต๐“ฒ๐“น๐“ฒ๐“ท๐“ธ ๐“ฒ๐“ผ ๐”€๐“ธ๐“ป๐“ฝ๐“ฑ ๐“ญ๐”‚๐“ฒ๐“ท๐“ฐ ๐“ฏ๐“ธ๐“ป," continue to resonate across generations.

Today, the legacy is honored through Ninoy Aquino Day, observed every August 21 (now, National Heroes Day), including the Ninoy Aquino International Airport. More than monuments, however, his true memorial lies in the democratic freedoms Filipinos enjoy today. -Adapted
