WHATTHEPAX?
The Philippines has become part of Pax Silica, a U.S.-led initiative that aims to strengthen the global supply chain for semiconductors and AI infrastructure. As part of this initiative, a 1,620-hectare industrial hub is proposed to be built in New Clark City.
The word "Pax" means peace, while "silica" refers to siliconโthe material that powers today's technology, from smartphones to artificial intelligence. Ngunit matatawag pa ba natin itong "Peace" kung hindi maganda ang dulot nito sa ating environment, national security, sovereignty, and the future of our country's natural resources?
Many believe that Pax Silica could bring significant opportunities. It has the potential to create jobs, attract foreign investments, boost the economy, and position the Philippines as a key player in the global technology industry. These are promising possibilities that could benefit many Filipinos.
However, every opportunity comes with responsibility. Marami ring concerns ang ibinabato tungkol sa posibleng epekto nito sa ating kalikasan, paggamit ng likas na yaman, at kung ang pangmatagalang benepisyo ba ay tunay na mas hihigit kaysa sa mga panganib. These concerns deserve to be heard, discussed, and carefully evaluated.
So here's a question for everyone:
If progress comes at the cost of our environment, is it still worth it?
Technology continues to transform our lives, but one thing remains irreplaceableโwater. We can create smarter AI, build more advanced technologies, and innovate faster than ever before, but without clean water and a healthy environment, no amount of technological advancement can sustain human life.
This is not simply about choosing between AI or water. It's about finding the right balance between innovation and environmental protection. Progress should never come at the expense of the natural resources that sustain life and will be inherited by future generations.
Will Pax Silica bring lasting peace and progress, or will it burden the Nation?
