THREE FILIPINO NAMES IN ORBIT 🌌

Keith Russel Pelagio Cadores, Joscel Kent Padayao Manzanero, and Eugene Rualizo Rivera were high school students from Camarines Sur National High School working on one question: How can solar panels capture more energy from the sun?

For their 2018 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair project, the three Filipino students designed an Arduino-controlled solar-tracking system with six photovoltaic panels. Built to move like flower petals, the device used servo motors and sensors to follow sunlight and help maximize power generation.

Their prototype generated 6.95 watts, compared with 4.71 watts from fixed-mounted panels. Even after accounting for the device’s own power consumption, their study found a 29.29% improvement in power generation.

The project earned them second-place recognition in the Energy: Physical category at the international science fair, following their success at the 2018 National Science and Technology Fair.

Their achievement later reached beyond Earth through three minor planets named in their honor:

🌌 (34523) Manzanero
🌌 (34524) Eugenerivera

The International Astronomical Union’s naming bulletin recognizes all three students for their award-winning energy research.

From a classroom in Naga City to objects orbiting the Sun, their story shows how Filipino student research can reach farther than anyone imagines.
