Love is God Himself expressed as life and light.
In the Lord’s Recovery we see that love is not merely a feeling, a moral virtue, or human kindness. According to 1 John 4:8, “God is love.” Love is the very essence of God’s nature, and it was manifested when God gave His Son to us (John 3:16). This love is not created; it is eternal and unchanging. In our experience, we cannot generate this kind of love by trying harder to be nice. We receive it when we contact the Lord in spirit (Eph 3:17), because the God of love is dispensing Himself into us as life (Rom 5:5). That’s why the Recovery emphasizes enjoying Christ daily, when we are filled with Him, we spontaneously live out His love.
Love is the inner substance of the Body of Christ.
The purpose of God’s love is not just to save us individually, but to build us into the Body of Christ for His expression (Eph 4:16). In the Recovery we speak of the “building up of the Body,” and this building happens only through love. Eph 4:15-16 says we grow up into Christ by “holding to truth in love” and the whole Body “builds itself up in love.” Love keeps us from isolating ourselves, from holding offenses, and from exalting our own opinions. It causes us to receive the saints as Christ received us (Rom 15:7), to bear one another’s burdens (Gal 6:2), and to cover sins with forgiveness (1 Pet 4:8). Without love, the church becomes a doctrinal system; with love, it becomes a living organism where Christ is expressed.
Love is the motivating power for our Christian life and service.
In the Lord’s Recovery, service is not driven by duty, ambition, or guilt. It flows from our love response to the Lord who first loved us (1 John 4:19). Paul said, “The love of Christ constrains us” (2 Cor 5:14) it compels, it impels, it becomes the inward force that makes us willing to spend and be spent for the saints. This love is patient, kind, not self-seeking (1 Cor 13:4-5), and it enables us to shepherd others as the Lord shepherds us (John 21:15-17). When we love the Lord and love one another, we spontaneously care for the church, preach the gospel, and stand one for the Lord’s testimony. That is why the Recovery continually brings us back to loving the Lord with the first love (Rev 2:4) because love is the source, the means, and the goal of everything in God’s economy.
