Through making a conscious effort to 𝓻𝓮𝓯𝓾𝓼𝓮 𝔀𝓱𝓪𝓽 𝔂𝓸𝓾 𝓬𝓪𝓷'𝓽 𝓻𝓮𝓾𝓼𝓮, we eliminate waste and take another significant step towards having a cleaner world. It’s high time we say goodbye to plastic and adopt a greener lifestyle.

A planet named after a Filipino researcher is a testament to the impact of Filipino excellence in science and innovation. May this remarkable achievement inspire the next generation of scientists to reach for the stars and make discoveries that change the world.

13241 BIYO ✨

Dr. Josette T. Biyo, an Ilongga science educator and former DOST–Science Education Institute director, was honored through 13241 Biyo, a minor planet/asteroid named after her.

The recognition came after she became the first Asian teacher to receive the Intel International Excellence in Teaching Award at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Louisville, Kentucky.

While it is often called “Planet Biyo” in public materials, 13241 Biyo is technically a main-belt asteroid, not one of the eight major planets of the Solar System. That distinction makes the story more scientifically accurate without making the honor any less historic.

For Filipino students, Dr. Biyo’s story is a reminder that excellence in teaching can reach far beyond the classroom—even all the way to the stars.

Every second you read this, every gram on your food label, every degree on a thermometer, none of it would mean anything without 𝙢𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙪𝙧𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩.

𝙈𝙚𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙮 is the science of measurement, and it quietly powers everything we trust in science, medicine, trade, and technology. From the nanometer precision of microchips to the atomic clocks that keep our GPS accurate, measurement is the invisible backbone of modern civilization.

Today, May 20th, we celebrate the anniversary of the 𝐌𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (𝟏𝟖𝟕𝟓), the treaty that gave the world a common language of measurement.
Because in science, precision isn't just important. 𝙄𝙩'𝙨 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜.

Today, May 16, we celebrate the International Day of Light, a global initiative proclaimed by ＵＮＥＳＣＯ that highlights the critical role light plays in science, culture, art, education, and sustainable development.

From the speed of light that governs the universe, to the lasers in our labs, to the sunlight that fuels life on Earth, light truly touches every part of our world. 🌞⚡

On this day in 1960, Theodore Maiman operated the first successful laser, a milestone that forever changed physics, medicine, communications, and beyond.

🌋𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗚𝗜𝗔𝗡𝗧 𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗥𝗦 𝗔𝗚𝗔𝗜𝗡: Mayon Volcano Activity Update

Recent volcanic activity at 𝓜𝓪𝔂𝓸𝓷 𝓥𝓸𝓵𝓬𝓪𝓷𝓸 serves as an important reminder of the powerful forces beneath Earth’s surface. As one of the Philippines’ most active volcanoes, Mayon’s eruptions occur when pressure from magma, gas, and heat builds up beneath the Earth’s crust, eventually forcing molten rock, ash, and gases outward.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗘𝗿𝘂𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀:
Volcanoes erupt due to the movement of tectonic plates and rising magma from beneath the Earth. When trapped gases expand, pressure increases until it is released through volcanic eruptions, producing hazards such as:
• Pyroclastic flows
• Ash fall
• Lava flows
• Lahars
• Toxic gas emissions

⚠️𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀:
✔️ Follow Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS-DOST) and local government advisories
✔️ Avoid entering permanent danger zones
✔️ Wear masks or damp cloths during ash fall
✔️ Prepare emergency kits and evacuation plans
✔️ Stay indoors when ash is heavy
✔️ Protect water and food supplies from contamination

𝐈𝐍𝐈𝐓 𝐀𝐋𝐄𝐑𝐓: Rising Heat Index in the Philippines 🇵🇭

Did you know that what we feel isn’t just the air temperature? It’s called the heat index, the “feels-like” temperature that combines air temperature and humidity. The higher the humidity, the hotter it feels, making it more dangerous for our bodies.

𝗛𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗲𝘅 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲 (𝗣𝗔𝗚𝗔𝗦𝗔):
🟢 27–32°C – Caution (fatigue is possible)
🟡 33–41°C – Extreme Caution (heat cramps and exhaustion are possible)
🟠 42–51°C – Danger (heat cramps and heat exhaustion are likely)
🔴 52°C and above – Extreme Danger (heat stroke is imminent)

With the ongoing El Niño, hotter and drier conditions are expected, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.

𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙮 𝙎𝙖𝙛𝙚, 𝙎𝙘𝙞𝙏𝙚𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙨!
💧 Drink plenty of water (even if you’re not thirsty)
🧢 Use umbrellas or hats, and wear light clothing
⏰ Avoid going outside during peak heat hours (10 AM – 4 PM)
🏫 Stay in shaded or well-ventilated areas
⚠️ Watch for signs of heat exhaustion (dizziness, headache, heavy sweating)

🔍 𝔻𝕚𝕕 𝕐𝕠𝕦 𝕂𝕟𝕠𝕨?

𝓒𝓻𝓾𝓭𝓮 𝓸𝓲𝓵 supplies about 1/3 of the world’s energy and is a key raw material for fuels like gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel. It is also used to make everyday products such as plastics, synthetic fabrics, asphalt, and even some medicines.

Formed from ancient organic matter over millions of years, crude oil is a nonrenewable resource, meaning it cannot be replaced on a human timescale.

Because many countries depend on oil for transportation and industry, any disruption in supply can quickly lead to higher fuel prices, increased cost of goods, and economic challenges.

⚠️ With limited reserves and growing demand, the world faces a crucial question: how can we use energy more wisely and explore sustainable alternatives?
